The Price Of Arrogance

Evelyn looked at the document for a moment, then looked up at Tiffany, who was shaking like a leaf on the floor. The young heiress who had been so loud and mean twenty minutes ago was now crying small, helpless tears of fear. She knew that one stroke of Evelyn's silver pen could strip away everything her family had built over twenty years. Her father had warned her many times to be humble and polite to everyone she met in the business world. But Tiffany had never listened, believing her youth, wealth, and golden dresses made her untouchable by normal human rules.

Tiffany: Please don't fire my dad. He worked so hard for your company for fifteen years!

Evelyn: Your father is a good, honest man who works very hard every single day of his life.

Tiffany: Then please forgive me! Punish me, not him!

Evelyn: But he made one big mistake. He raised a daughter who treats hardworking people like trash on the floor.

Evelyn opened the document folder, revealing the multi-million dollar management contract that was up for renewal this very week. Tiffany held her breath, watching Evelyn's hand hold the silver pen over the official signature line at the bottom. The room was totally quiet except for the quiet humming of the ship's engine deep down in the hull below. Evelyn did not sign her name; instead, she closed the folder slowly and handed it directly to the lawyer. The lawyer took it with a small nod, putting it inside his black leather bag without saying a single word.

Lawyer: The contract extension is placed on hold pending a full executive board review next Monday morning.

Tiffany: What does that mean? Are we losing the business?

Evelyn: It means your father will have to present his case to the board in person next week.

Tiffany: And what about me? What do I have to do to make this right?

Evelyn: You will start by leaving my boat immediately before I press criminal assault charges against you.

Evelyn stood up from the sofa, her dark blue suit looking clean, neat, and sharp despite the red scratch on her face. She walked right past Tiffany, not giving her a second glance as she walked out toward the sunny deck. Two large security guards stepped in front of Tiffany, blocking her path and gesturing toward the side exit door quietly. Tiffany hung her head low, her soaked golden sequin dress dragging along the floor as she was led away in shame. The other guests on the boat watched her walk past, whispers and quiet laughter following her every step out. Nobody reached out to comfort her, nobody offered a towel, and nobody stepped up to defend her bad behavior today.

She was walked down the main gangplank to the public wooden dock, where dozens of tourists were taking pictures of boats. She stood there on the hot concrete dock in her wet, ruined dress, holding her broken heels in her hands. Her phone was ruined by the salt water inside her purse, leaving her with no way to call a car ride. People on the dock pointed at her and laughed, recognizing her as the girl who got shoved off the luxury yacht. She had to walk three miles down the hot ocean road in her bare feet to get back home today.
