The Party On The Deck

The bright Miami sun bounced off the calm ocean water, lighting up the massive white luxury yacht anchored near the coast. Dozens of wealthy people walked around the top deck holding champagne glasses, laughing at silly jokes, and showing off expensive jewelry. Waiters in clean black tuxedos walked around with silver trays of seafood, smiling nicely at every guest who walked past them. Among the crowd was a young woman named Tiffany Vance, who wore a shimmering golden sequin gown that caught everyone's eye immediately. Tiffany was thirty years old and felt like she owned the whole state of Florida because her family ran a big business in town.

She walked with her head held high, looking down at anyone who was not wearing designer clothes or driver-driven cars. She had worked hard to get invited to this exclusive charity party, hoping to find a wealthy husband or make deals with rich boat owners. She looked around the deck with cold blue eyes, checking who was important and who was useless to her ambition. Near the middle of the ship, an older woman sat alone at a polished wooden table under a white shade umbrella. She wore a simple dark blue business suit with no shiny diamonds or heavy gold necklaces to attract attention. Her grey hair was tied back neatly, and her face showed deep wisdom gained from long years of hard work.

Tiffany looked at the older woman and sneered, feeling annoyed that someone so simple was sitting at the best table on the boat. She walked over to the table, her golden dress making a soft rustling sound with every single step she took forward. She put one hand on her hip and looked down at the older woman with clear disgust in her eyes. The older woman was reading a thin contract document, holding a small silver pen in her right hand as she worked. Tiffany knocked her knuckles on the wooden table loudly, making the older woman look up from her paperwork with calm eyes.

Tiffany: Why are you sitting at the main sponsor table in that boring dark suit?

Evelyn: Because this is where I was invited to sit by the captain today, young lady.

Tiffany: You look like a secretary who snuck aboard to steal free food from rich people.

Evelyn: Looks can be very misleading when you judge people only by their clothes.

Tiffany laughed meanly, crossing her arms over her shiny golden dress while leaning down closer to Evelyn's face. She thought Evelyn was just a lonely retired woman who had won a cheap contest ticket to get onto the yacht. Evelyn kept her cool, slowly putting her silver pen down onto the clean document sitting on the sunny deck table. She picked up her water glass, took a small sip, and looked back at Tiffany without showing any fear at all.

Tiffany: Move to the back of the boat before I call security to kick you off.

Evelyn: I am perfectly comfortable right here enjoying the warm sun and fresh air.

Tiffany: You are ruining the high-class view for my rich friends with your ugly outfit.

Evelyn: Then you are free to walk to another corner of this big boat.

Tiffany's face turned red with sudden rage because she was not used to anyone talking back to her so calmly. She grabbed Evelyn's water glass and knocked it over, spilling cold water all across the important legal paper on the table. Evelyn stood up slowly, her dark blue suit uncreased, her eyes turning into sharp pieces of dark ice right then. She pulled a silk napkin from her pocket and began wiping the wet table without saying a single angry word back. Tiffany stepped closer, furious that her loud action did not make the older woman cry or run away in shame.

Tiffany: You need to learn how to respect your superiors when you speak to them!

Evelyn: Superiority is earned through character and hard work, not by wearing cheap gold sequins.

The words hit Tiffany like a sharp strike, making her lose her temper entirely in front of the other nearby guests. She raised her right hand fast and swung it with all her strength across Evelyn's cheek with a loud crack sound. The strike was so hard that Tiffany's sharp fake fingernails left a dark bloody scratch right along Evelyn's cheekbone instantly.
