The morning sun gleamed off the glass windows of the Vance Corporate Tower in downtown Dallas.
Twelve board members sat around the polished mahogany table, murmuring as Richard Vance paced back and forth at the head of the room.
Board Member 1: Richard, why did you call an emergency vote to liquidate the estate assets on twenty-four hours' notice?
Richard: It is a strategic move to optimize our tax exposure before the fiscal quarter ends!
Board Member 2: But this represents sixty percent of the company's liquid capital! We need proper documentation!
Richard: As chief trustee, I have full authority to execute this transfer today! Sign the authorization forms!
The thick double doors of the boardroom burst open with a heavy thud.
Mark walked in wearing his formal firefighter dress uniform, flanked by two armed federal marshals and Detective Miller from the Dallas Police Department.
Behind them walked Alex, holding Mary's hand gently as she walked using a supportive cane.
Richard: What is the meaning of this intrusion?! Security! Remove these people immediately!
Detective Miller: Stand down, Mr. Vance. Security has already been ordered to cooperate with federal authorities.
Board Member 1: Detective, what is going on here?
Mark: What's going on is that your CEO has been running a massive corporate fraud scheme using stolen inheritance funds!
Richard: Lies! False allegations from bitter family members!
Alex: Uncle David, plug this drive into the room projector.
Alex stepped forward, tossing the small silver flash drive onto the mahogany table in front of his late mother's brother, David Vance.
David immediately plugged the drive into his laptop, clicking through the encrypted folders as bank spreadsheets filled the large wall screens.
David: Good God... Richard... these are accounts in the Cayman Islands... under your personal name!
Board Member 2: Look at these dates! Forty million dollars transferred from Alex's trust fund over three years!
Richard: It was a loan! A corporate bridge loan!
Mary: A bridge loan doesn't require forging a beneficiary's signature, Richard. Nor does it require keeping the accountant locked in a hidden residential building!
Gasps filled the room as Mary stepped into the bright light, her voice clear and commanding despite her delicate frame.
Board Member 1: Is this... is this Mary Miller?! The girl who went missing two years ago?!
Mary: Yes. And Richard Vance paid two off-duty security guards to hold me hostage so I couldn't present these documents to this board.
Detective Miller: Richard Vance, you are under arrest for federal bank fraud, grand larceny, forging legal documents, and felony kidnapping.
Richard: You can't do this to me! I built this company! I am the head of this family!
Mark: You aren't family, Richard. You were just a thief in a suit.
The marshals pulled Richard's arms behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists over his expensive coat sleeves.
