A Firefighter Found His Wife's Ring In A Burning Building

Thick black smoke poured through the narrow hallway of the burning apartment complex, choking out the daylight.

Captain Mark Miller rushed down the white-walled corridor, his heavy firefighter boots thundering against the floor.

Mark: Clear the floor! Is anyone left in these rooms?!

A faint groan echoed from near the end of the hall, barely audible over the roaring flames.

Mark dropped to his knees, crawling past the white doors until he spotted a blonde woman slumped against the wall.

Mark: Mary! Stay with me! Can you hear my voice?!

The pregnant woman, wearing a soot-stained beige cardigan, cried uncontrollably as she clutched her swollen stomach.

Mary: Please... help me... I can't breathe...

Mark: Ma'am, stay with me! We are going to get you out of here right now!

Mary lifted a trembling, soot-covered hand, her fingers shaking wildly as she reached for his thick turnout glove.

Mary: No... it's too late for me... Take this...

She slid a delicate diamond wedding ring onto his gloved palm, her voice cracking into a weak whisper.

Mary: Give this to Alex... Tell him... my baby and I won't be waiting anymore...

Mark: What did you just say?! Who is Alex?!

Mark stared down at the small diamond band sitting in his palm, his blood suddenly turning to ice in his veins.

He recognized that exact ring—it was the custom engagement band his younger brother Alex had given his missing fiancée two years ago.

Mark bowed his head in utter shock as tears cut clean lines through the soot on his face.

The woman dying in his arms wasn't a stranger; she was the missing bride his entire family had been searching for.

And the man who had trapped her in this burning building was still standing outside in the crowd.
