The security officers stepped forward, catching Victoria by her arms as she screamed and kicked, dragging her out through the main archway toward the waiting police cruisers whose red and blue lights were already flashing against the front glass doors. Arthur sat slumped on a hallway chair, head in his hands, waiting for the officers to return for his statement.
Julian walked back over to Martha and took Lily back into his arms. The little girl wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, resting her head against his collarbone.
Julian: You were so brave, Lily. You kept your mommy's voice safe for us.
Lily: I kept the plushie tight, Daddy... even when the mean lady tried to take it.
Julian: I know, baby. I know. You did so good.
Evelyn walked over, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on Julian's shoulder as she looked at her granddaughter with soft tears in her eyes.
Evelyn: I can't believe we had a snake living under our roof for so long. Clara's memory was almost ruined by that monster.
Julian: It's over now, Mother. The lawyers will freeze all of Victoria's accounts tonight, and Clara's original will is going straight to the probate judge tomorrow morning.
Evelyn: What about the trust fund?
Julian: Everything goes directly into a protected fund for Lily when she turns eighteen, exactly as her mother wanted. Not a single penny will ever be touched by anyone else.
Lily: Daddy... can we fix my bunny now?
Julian looked down at the torn stuffed toy in Lily's small hand, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through his exhaustion. He kissed the top of her head as Martha brought over a clean cloth to wipe the dust from her cheeks.
Julian: We're going to fix your bunny, and then we're going to read every single word your mommy wrote for you. Together.
Lily: Did mommy love me a lot?
Julian: More than anything in the world, sweetheart. And nobody is ever going to hide her love from you again.
The grand hall was quiet now, the guests quietly leaving as the truth settled over the house. Julian carried his daughter up the grand staircase toward her room, holding her tight, leaving the lies and darkness behind in the open wall below.
