Sarah looked down at Mark as the noisy bus station hummed around them.
She saw the true pain and remorse written across his face.
She knew how deeply he loved his daughter Lily.
His fear had turned into wild anger in that terrible second on the stairs.
She reached down and gently pulled him up to his feet.
Sarah: I was terrified too, Mark.
Mark: I should have trusted you from the start.
Sarah: You were protecting your child like any father would.
Mark: That is no excuse for how I treated you.
Sarah: How is Lily doing right now?
Mark: She is sleeping, but she asked for you before she fell asleep.
Sarah picked up her small canvas bag from the bench.
She handed her unused bus ticket back to the clerk at the window.
Mark grabbed her heavy bag and carried it out to his truck.
They drove back through the quiet city streets in comfortable silence.
The tension that had filled the air was finally gone.
When they arrived back at the house, Mark opened the front door quietly.
He immediately led Sarah to the top of the grand marble stairs.
He showed her the broken banister piece sitting on the floor.
He had already taped off the dangerous area so no one could touch it.
Mark: I am calling a repair crew first thing in the morning.
Sarah: That is a very good idea.
They walked down the quiet hallway together toward Lily's bedroom door.
Mark pushed the door open gently to reveal the small glowing nightlight.
Lily was sitting up in bed hugging her stuffed teddy bear tightly.
Her eyes lit up with pure joy the moment she saw Sarah in the doorway.
Lily: Sarah! You came back!
Sarah: Of course I came back, sweetheart.
Lily reached out her small arms for a warm hug.
Sarah walked over and wrapped her arms tenderly around the little girl.
Mark stood in the doorway watching them with a grateful heart.
He knew he had been given a second chance at protecting his family.
