The Scare On The Stairs

A Father Finds Out What Really Happened On The Stairs

The afternoon sun streamed through the high glass windows of the grand entrance hall.

Mark was standing near his home office desk when a sharp cry shattered the quiet house.

He recognized the voice instantly as his seven-year-old daughter Lily.

His heart hammered against his ribs as he sprinted out into the hallway.

High above on the landing, Sarah was leaning over the balcony railing with her arms outstretched.

Lily was slipping past the wide wooden banisters of the second-floor stairwell.

Mark did not hesitate for even a fraction of a second.

He lunged across the polished white tile floor with all his speed.

He dove across the final few feet just as Lily fell through the gap.

Mark caught his small daughter against his chest as they tumbled together onto the floor.

The impact knocked the breath straight out of his lungs.

He wrapped his arms tightly around her to cushion her fall.

Lily was sobbing hysterically into his jacket.

Mark stroked her hair with a trembling hand.

Mark: I got you, baby, I got you.

Lily: Daddy, I was so scared!

Mark: You are safe now, I promise.

Mark stood up slowly while holding his daughter firmly against his shoulder.

His eyes lifted to the top of the marble staircase.

Sarah stood near the top step with her hands pressed against her mouth.

Her face was completely pale and her chest heaved as she gasped for air.

Mark felt a wave of absolute fury wash over him as he stared at her.

He had seen her hands right next to Lily right before the fall.

He carried Lily up the stairs with slow and heavy steps.

Sarah stepped back as Mark reached the upper landing.

Sarah: Mark, oh thank God she is okay!

Mark: Don't you ever touch my child again!

Sarah: Mark, listen to me, I was trying to hold her back!

Mark: I saw where your hands were!

Sarah: You are misunderstanding what happened!

Mark: Get out of my house right now!

Sarah took another step backward as if she had been struck.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked at the man she loved.

She had lived in this home as Lily's nanny for over two years.

She loved the little girl as if she were her own family.

Yet Mark was glaring at her with total hatred.

He pointed a firm finger toward the heavy front door below.

Sarah wanted to explain the loose banister step, but Mark turned his back on her.

He walked into Lily's bedroom and slammed the door shut behind them.

Sarah stood alone on the upper landing, her heart breaking into pieces.

She knew she could not leave without proving her innocence.
