The Fear In Her Eyes

A Father Finds His Missing Daughter Hidden In The Wall

Sarah grabbed Mark's upper arm with a surprisingly tight grip.

Her fingernails dug into the fabric of his blue button-down shirt.

Sarah: Mark, please, just leave it alone and come have breakfast.

Mark stood up slowly, breaking away from her strong hold.

Mark: Why are you acting so nervous about an air vent, Sarah?

Sarah: I am not nervous! I just don't want you breaking the drywall over a child's game!

Mark looked down at Ethan, who was hugging his knees tightly on the floor.

Mark: Ethan, did you hear a voice coming from in there?

Ethan nodded his head fast, refusing to look at his mother.

Ethan: She said she wanted her dad.

Sarah stepped between Mark and the lower ventilation grate.

Sarah: Ethan, go to your bedroom right now!

Ethan: But Mom—

Sarah: Go to your room this instant, Ethan!

The boy scrambled up off the floor and ran down the hallway toward his room.

His bedroom door shut with a loud click a moment later.

Mark faced his wife, his chest heaving with growing anger and confusion.

Mark: Why did you yell at him like that?

Sarah: Because he is lying and disturbing the peace of this house!

Mark: He is seven years old, Sarah, why would he make up something like this?

Sarah turned her face away, refusing to meet his direct gaze.

Sarah: You know how kids get after watching cartoons.

Mark took a deep breath, trying to keep his composure.

He had been married to Sarah for four years now.

She had always been a devoted wife and a caring stepmother to Ethan.

However, over the last few months, her behavior had changed drastically.

She had become secretive, locking doors she used to leave open.

She insisted on doing all the home maintenance and cleaning by herself.

Mark had assumed she was just stressed out from her busy job.

Now, standing in the kitchen, a dark suspicion began to take root in his mind.

Mark: Step aside, Sarah.

Sarah: No, Mark, you are being completely paranoid!

Mark: If there is nothing in there, then proving it will only take a second.

Mark stepped around her, but Sarah threw her arms out to block his way.

Sarah: I am telling you as your wife that there is nothing inside that wall!

Mark: Then why are you standing in my way?

Sarah's voice cracked with raw, unstable emotion.

Sarah: Because you never trust me!

Mark stared at her, feeling a wall of deception growing between them.

He felt a sudden, terrible silence settle over the bright kitchen.

Then, from deep inside the lower wall vent, a tiny metallic rattle sounded.

It was the unmistakable sound of small fingers tapping against metal.

Mark froze instantly, his breath catching in his throat.

Sarah went completely still, her face turning as white as a sheet.

Mark: Did you hear that?

Sarah: It was just rats in the pipes, Mark, nothing more!

Mark dropped back down to his knees on the tile floor.

He pressed his ear close against the cold metal slats of the vent cover.

He held his breath, listening with every ounce of his attention.

A soft, trembling voice whimpered quietly from the dark space behind the grate.

Voice from vent: Daddy... please help me...

The words were faint, but they sounded clearly through the small room.

Mark felt his heart tear completely open in utter shock.

He recognized that soft, delicate voice immediately.

It was a voice he had thought he would never hear again in his entire life.

He turned his head slowly and stared up at his wife in sheer horror.
