The Secret In The Wall

A Father Finds His Missing Daughter Hidden In The Wall

Mark sat at the kitchen counter with a hot cup of coffee in his hands.

The early morning sun poured through the wide windows of their suburban home.

Everything about the morning seemed completely normal on the surface.

His seven-year-old son Ethan was quietly playing on the tile floor nearby.

Mark loved these quiet moments before he had to leave for his office downtown.

He looked over at his son and smiled warmly.

Ethan had always been a kind and caring child.

However, Mark noticed that Ethan was acting a little strange this morning.

The boy kept glancing over his shoulder toward the lower wall vent.

It was a standard metal ventilation grate near the pantry door.

Mark watched as Ethan picked up a slice of fresh white bread.

Ethan dropped to his knees on the cold kitchen floor.

He began carefully pushing tiny pieces of bread through the metal slats.

Mark set his coffee cup down on the granite counter with a soft thud.

He leaned forward to get a better look at what his son was doing.

Mark: Ethan, what are you doing with that bread?

Ethan froze instantly when he heard his father's voice.

The young boy pulled his hand back as if he had been burned.

He turned around slowly, his wide eyes full of deep panic.

Ethan: Nothing, Dad! I was just playing!

Mark stood up from the barstool and walked slowly across the kitchen.

Mark: Son, we do not throw food on the floor or push it into the walls.

Ethan scrambled backward on his knees, pressing his back against the lower cabinets.

Ethan: Mom told me not to tell you!

Mark stopped in his tracks, feeling a sudden chill run down his spine.

Mark: What did your mother tell you not to say?

Ethan: She said I would get in big trouble if I said anything!

Mark knelt down on the floor right beside his young son.

Mark: You are not in trouble, Ethan, but you need to be honest with me.

Ethan: That little girl is really hungry, Dad.

Mark felt his heart skip a beat in complete confusion.

Mark: What little girl are you talking about?

Ethan raised his small hand and pointed directly at the dark metal ventilation grate.

Ethan: The girl inside the wall.

Mark stared at the grate in total disbelief.

He thought his son was just playing an imaginative game.

Yet the sheer terror on Ethan's face was completely genuine.

Mark: Ethan, there cannot be anyone inside the heating ducts.

Ethan: Yes there is! She talks to me when Mom is in the shower!

Mark reached out toward the metal vent cover with a slow, hesitant hand.

Before his fingers could touch the metal, fast footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Sarah rushed into the kitchen, her face pale and her hair undone.

Sarah: Mark, what are you doing down on the floor?

Mark turned his head to look up at his wife.

He noticed how tense her shoulders were and how her hands trembled slightly.

Mark: Ethan says there is someone inside this vent.

Sarah took a quick step backward, gasping for air.

Sarah: That is ridiculous! He is just making up silly stories again!

Mark: He looks terrified, Sarah.

Sarah: He has an overactive imagination, Mark, you know how kids are!

Mark looked back and forth between his wife and his young son.

The air in the room suddenly felt heavy and suffocating.

He realized that something was deeply wrong in his house.

He had lived here for three years, believing his family was perfectly safe.

Now a strange sense of dread settled deep in his chest.

He moved his hand closer to the lower grate once again.

Sarah practically lunged forward to stop him.

Sarah: Don't open it!

Mark paused, his hand inches away from the cold metal.

He looked up into his wife's eyes and saw absolute terror staring back.
