Six months later, bright summer daylight filled the backyard gardens of the Vance estate. The stone balcony high above was now fitted with clear reinforced safety glass panels that reached six feet high, making it completely impossible for anyone to fall.
In the city courtroom downtown, the trial had concluded quickly. With the undeniable video footage and Leo's brave testimony, Victoria was sentenced to twenty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole. Her claims on the family trust were completely erased by the court.
Richard sat on a wooden bench on the lawn, watching Leo and Mia run through the lawn sprinklers with laughter echoing across the grass. His corporate attorney walked across the patio, holding a folder of completed legal documents.
Lawyer: Everything is signed and finalized, Richard. The estate trust belongs entirely to your children now.
Richard: Thank you, Mark. That money will sit in a safe vault until they're old enough to manage it themselves.
Lawyer: You did the right thing. Most men would have broken under that kind of pressure.
Richard: I had to be strong. My son showed me what real courage looks like that morning.
The attorney shook Richard's hand firmly before walking back toward his car. Richard stood up and walked over to the edge of the lawn where Leo was drying off with a bright blue towel.
Richard: Hey, chief. Come here for a second.
Leo ran over, his hair damp from the sprinklers, a bright smile on his face.
Leo: Yeah, Dad?
Richard: I got something for you today. A little early birthday present.
Richard reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. He opened it to reveal a fine leather watch with a small silver plate engraved on the back.
Leo: Wow! A real watch like yours?
Richard: Read what it says on the back, Leo.
Leo turned the watch over carefully, reading the small engraved words out loud with a proud grin.
Leo: To my hero, Leo. Protector of our family.
Richard: Put it on, son. You earned it more than anyone in the world.
Leo fastened the strap around his small wrist, looking down at the ticking hand with immense pride before looking back up at his father.
Leo: I'll always protect Mia, Dad. No matter what.
Richard: I know you will, Leo. I know you will.
Mia ran over, splashing through the wet grass, holding her brother's hand tightly as they all walked together toward the house under the bright, warm sky.
