The morning sun poured through high glass doors of the Vance mansion, painting the oak floors in bright daylight. High above the foyer, white moldings stretched past framed paintings, but the silence was shattered by a terrifying scream. Eight-year-old Leo leaned over the stone balcony railing, his small body shaking under heavy strain. Tears streamed down his freckled cheeks as his fingers gripped his five-year-old sister's wrist tightly over the drop.
Mia hung in the empty air, her beige dress fluttering three stories above the marble floor. From the hallway behind them, heavy footsteps thundered across floorboards as Richard Vance rushed through the terrace doors. His dark suit jacket flew open while his heart hammered against his ribs in absolute horror.
Richard: Mia! Leo!
Richard dropped to his knees at the railing, reaching his long arms over the edge. With one powerful heave, he pulled Mia over the stone ledge and slammed her tightly against his chest, dropping back onto the balcony floor.
Richard: Good boy, Leo! Good boy!
Mia: Daddy! Daddy!
Leo sank back against the stone wall, catching his breath with wide, tearful eyes. His hands were bright red and trembling from holding his sister's full weight for so long.
Richard: Look at me, Leo. Look at me right now.
Leo: We're okay, Daddy. We're okay.
Richard: How did she fall over this railing? This ledge is four feet high!
Leo: She didn't fall, Daddy. Someone pushed her.
Richard froze, his eyes widening as he stared at his son's pale face. He realized the real nightmare in his home had only just begun.
Richard: Leo, think very carefully. What do you mean someone pushed her?
Leo: I was in the hall, Daddy. I saw a hand push her back!
Richard: Whose hand, Leo? Did you see their face?
Leo: I didn't see a face. Just a black sleeve and a gold watch.
Richard felt a cold chill run down his spine. He wrapped one arm around Mia, holding her close while his eyes scanned the empty hallway behind the balcony doors.
Richard: Mia, sweetheart, can you speak to Daddy? What happened out here?
Mia: A lady told me there was a bird nest over the wall, Daddy.
Richard: A bird nest?
Mia: Yes. She said if I stood on the chair, I could see the tiny eggs.
Richard: What chair? There are no chairs on this balcony.
Leo pointed toward the corner of the hallway inside, where a heavy wooden patio chair sat out of place against the wall.
Leo: Someone put that chair by the railing, Daddy. Then they dragged it back inside!
Richard: Did you see them move the chair, Leo?
Leo: I heard it scraping on the oak floor right before Mia screamed!
Footsteps echoed from the grand staircase as Victoria, Richard's stepmother, rushed onto the balcony wearing a silk robe, her face twisted in fake panic.
Victoria: Oh my goodness! Richard! What was all that screaming?
Richard: Mia almost fell from the third-floor balcony, Victoria.
Victoria: Heavenly Father! Is she all right? How could a child climb up there?
Richard: She didn't climb up on her own. Someone set a chair by the ledge.
Victoria: A chair? Well, that must have been the new housekeeper being careless!
Richard: The housekeeper isn't here today. It's her day off.
Victoria: Oh... well, then Mia must have moved it herself! Children do unpredictable things, Richard.
Leo: Mia can't lift that heavy chair, Grandma Victoria!
Victoria: Don't yell at me, young man! You are just upset from the scare!
Richard: Victoria, what were you doing upstairs just now?
Victoria: I was in my room, reading my morning mail! What kind of question is that?
Richard: I noticed you're wearing your gold watch this morning.
Victoria pulled her silk sleeve down quickly, covering her wrist with a nervous laugh while Richard stared directly into her eyes.
Victoria: I wear this watch every morning, Richard. Your late father gave it to me.
Richard: Leo said he saw a black sleeve and a gold watch pushing Mia.
Victoria: Are you seriously taking the word of an eight-year-old child over mine?
Richard: My son just held his sister over a fifty-foot drop. I trust every single word he says.
Victoria: This is ridiculous! I came out here out of concern for my grandchildren!
Richard: They aren't your biological grandchildren, Victoria. And after today, you won't be anywhere near them.
Victoria: You can't talk to me like that in this house! Half of this estate belongs to the family trust!
Richard: The trust fund my father left, which you've been trying to control for three years.
Victoria: That trust fund funds this entire mansion! If anything happens to those children, the estate management reverts to me!
Richard stood up slowly, keeping both children behind his back as he stared into his stepmother's cold eyes.
Richard: Say that last sentence again, Victoria.
Victoria: I... I simply meant the legal structure of your father's will!
Richard: You just mentioned what happens if something happens to my children.
Victoria: You are twisting my words, Richard! I am calling my lawyer!
Richard: Call whoever you want. Because I'm calling the police, and I'm checking the security cameras right now.
Victoria's face turned pale as Richard picked up Mia, grabbed Leo's hand, and walked firmly back inside the mansion.
