Mark carried Lily up the winding staircase and into her brightly decorated bedroom.
He gently set her down on her soft bed and sat right beside her.
Mark: You're safe now, sweetie. Daddy is right here with you.
Lily wiped away her tears with the back of her small hand, breathing heavily.
Lily: Is she going to make you mad at me, Daddy?
Mark: Nobody will ever make me mad at you, Lily. I promise.
Mark brushed a strand of hair from her forehead, his heart breaking for her.
Mark: Has Vanessa raised her voice at you before today?
Lily looked down at her lap, her small fingers twisting the edge of her blanket.
Lily: Whenever you go to work, she gets mean to me.
Mark's blood ran cold as he listened to his daughter's quiet confession.
Lily: She tells me that this is her house now and I have to obey her rules.
Mark: Why didn't you tell me sooner, my sweet girl?
Lily: She said you would be sad and leave if I said anything bad about her.
Mark closed his eyes for a moment as guilt washed over him like a wave.
He realized that Vanessa had deliberately manipulated a terrified little child into remaining silent.
The costly mistake of rushing into a second marriage suddenly hit him with heavy force.
Mark: I am never leaving you, Lily. You are my top priority forever.
Lily: Do you promise, Daddy?
Mark: I promise on my life. Nobody will ever scare you in this home again.
Mark kissed her forehead and made sure she felt completely safe and secure.
He handed her a clean teddy bear from her shelf to hold onto tight.
Mark: Stay in your room and play quietly while I handle this downstairs.
Lily nodded softly, hugging the soft bear close to her chest.
Mark stood up, his jaw set in firm determination as he turned to leave.
