Standing Between The Fire

A Father Discovers What His New Wife Did To His Daughter

Mark charged into the brightly lit kitchen without hesitation, his footsteps echoing on the tile.

He immediately placed himself directly between Vanessa and his trembling daughter.

Mark: What do you think you are doing?

Vanessa gasped loudly and took a step back, her eyes widening in total shock.

She quickly tried to soften her expression, but the anger was still visible on her face.

Vanessa: Mark! You're home early. I was just trying to discipline her!

Mark: You are screaming in her face and taking her things!

Lily wrapped her small arms tightly around her father's leg, hiding behind him completely.

Mark picked up his crying daughter and held her securely against his chest.

He could feel her little body shaking with fear as she buried her face in his neck.

Lily: Daddy, she said she was going to ruin my room!

Vanessa: That is a complete lie! She dropped my expensive imported porcelain vase!

Vanessa pointed aggressively toward the floor, where shards of blue glass lay scattered.

Vanessa: She did it deliberately to make me upset while you were away!

Mark: She is a six-year-old child, Vanessa!

Vanessa: She needs structure, Mark! You spoil her far too much every day!

Mark looked down at the shattered vase, then back up into Vanessa's eyes.

The woman standing in front of him did not look like the gentle partner he married.

Mark: A piece of glass can be replaced, but my daughter's safety cannot.

Vanessa: So you're blaming me? I'm your wife!

Mark: You don't talk to her like that in this house ever again.

Vanessa: I have rights in this house too, Mark!

Mark felt a cold knot form in his stomach as he recognized her true nature.

He had invited a stranger into his child's safe space, and he felt deep regret.

Mark: We are going upstairs right now, and you need to calm down.

Vanessa folded her arms across her golden silk blouse, glaring bitterly at them both.
