The bright chandeliers inside the grand Manhattan ballroom cast a warm glow over hundreds of wealthy guests. Soft laughter filled the air as servers walked around carrying expensive drinks on silver trays. Victoria stood near the center of the hall wearing an elegant navy dress. She smiled politely at the mayor and his wife while taking a small sip from her glass. Everything about the night was carefully planned to show off her family's incredible success and charitable foundation.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the front entrance slammed open with a loud thud that echoed off the high marble walls. The lively orchestra stopped playing almost instantly as people turned their heads toward the disturbance. Security guards stepped forward quickly to intercept whatever had entered, but they froze when they saw who it was. A small girl, no older than seven years old, was crawling across the spotless white floor. Her hair was tangled and filled with dirt, and her white dress was completely ruined with mud stains.
The child clutched a filthy black leather purse against her chest with one hand while holding a worn pink blanket with the other. A noticeable red scrape marked her cheek, and her little boots left small gray smears on the expensive marble. Gasps erupted through the crowd as guests backed away to avoid touching her. Victoria felt her stomach drop for a reason she could not explain. Something about the child's desperate green eyes made Victoria move before her mind could even think.
She excused herself from the mayor and pushed past the crowd of staring onlookers. Her high heels clicked against the hard floor as she approached the shivering little girl. The child looked up with fierce determination, pulling her pink blanket even tighter around her fragile shoulders. Victoria dropped down to her knees right there on the cold marble floor, completely ignoring the fact that her designer dress was sweeping against the dirt.
"Sweetheart, are you okay?" Victoria asked softly, trying to make her voice sound as gentle as possible. "Where are your parents? How did you get in here?"
The young girl did not answer at first. She just panted softly, her small chest heaving up and down. Her dirty fingers squeezed the straps of the old purse until her knuckles turned white. Victoria reached out a clean hand, her heart pounding heavily inside her chest. The little girl flinched and pulled back defensively, letting out a sharp gasp. Victoria paused and raised both hands slowly to show she meant no harm. She looked deeply into the girl's face and noticed a faint splash of freckles across her nose. Those freckles looked terribly familiar to Victoria.
"I won't hurt you," Victoria whispered, her breath trembling. "Let me see the bag, little girl."
"It's not yours!" the girl shouted back, her young voice cracking under the pressure of terror and fatigue. "Stay away from my things!"
The entire ballroom remained completely silent as everyone watched the powerful businesswoman kneeling in front of a ragged child. Victoria felt a strange chill run down her spine as she looked at the dirty leather purse. The leather was cracked and aged, but the metal buckle had a very distinct square shape. It was a custom item that Victoria had not seen in nearly fifteen long years.
