The air inside the sunlit master bedroom became completely still as Hannah clutched the green binder against her chest. Mark looked back and forth between his pale, shaking mother and his determined wife, sense of severe dread filling his chest. For months, Mark had tried to keep the peace, constantly urging Hannah to be patient while reassuring his mother that their marriage was solid. Now, looking at the raw terror on his mother's face, he realized something terrible had been kept hidden from him inside his own home.
Mark: Hannah, please, tell me what is going on right now. What is inside that binder?
Hannah: Ask your mother, Mark. Ask her why she kept this locked inside her private safe for the last two years.
Victoria: Mark, do not listen to her! She stole that from my personal desk! It contains confidential company files!
Hannah: Company files? Is that what you call your late husband's secret trust fund and real estate documents?
Mark turned his head slowly toward Victoria, his forehead creasing with deep confusion and growing concern. When Mark's father passed away four years ago, Victoria had claimed that the family estate had been left entirely to her, leaving Mark with only a small salary from the family business until he proved his worth. Mark had accepted it without question because he loved his mother and trusted her word blindly.
Mark: Mom... Dad's trust fund? You told me Dad didn't set up a separate trust fund before he died.
Victoria: He was sick at the end, Mark! He didn't know what he was signing! I managed everything to protect our family business!
Hannah: She lies as easily as she breathes, Mark. This green binder holds the original signed copy of your father's final will and trust agreement.
Victoria lunged forward again, her red polished nails reaching out like claws to snatch the green folder right out of Hannah's hands. But Mark stepped in front of her instantly, placing his hands firmly on his mother's shoulders to hold her back from his wife.
Mark: Mom, stop it! Sit down on the chair right now!
Victoria: Mark, you are picking this girl over your own mother! After everything I have sacrificed to build this mansion and protect our name!
Hannah: You didn't protect the family, Victoria. You protected your own lifestyle by robbing your own son of his rightful inheritance!
Hannah flipped open the green binder with a crisp snap of paper, revealing official legal documents complete with raised notary seals and clear signatures. She turned to page three, holding it up so Mark could read the heavy black ink typed across the top of the paper under the bright Texas sunlight.
Hannah: Read it, Mark. Read what your father actually wanted for you and your future.
Mark leaned in closer, his blue eyes scanning down the formal paragraph as his jaw tightened until the muscles popped along his cheeks. The document clearly stated that fifty percent of the Dallas family estate, including the corporate stocks and the mansion itself, was to be transferred immediately to Mark upon his thirtieth birthday, which had passed six months ago.
Mark: This... this says I own half of the mansion and the full investment account. Mom, why did you tell me the court tied up the estate in a lawsuit?
Victoria: Because you were going to waste it on her! Look at her! She is a nobody! She would have taken half in a divorce lawyer settlement!
Hannah: I never wanted your money, Victoria! I only wanted Mark to be treated like a son instead of your personal servant!
Victoria: Shut up! You have no right to speak inside my house!
Hannah: It isn't just your house anymore, Victoria. According to this legal document, Mark owns half of every single square foot you stand on.
Victoria sank back onto the edge of a nearby armchair, her aggressive composure completely crumbling as her chest heaved with shallow, frantic breaths. The truth had finally broken through the high walls of the Dallas mansion, and no amount of yelling or pillow attacks could put the pieces back together again.
