Twenty minutes passed as Sarah talked with a helpful estate planner near the juice bar. Lily sat on a velvet bench nearby, quietly coloring in a small book she brought along. Suddenly, a sharp gasp echoed across the grand ballroom. The cheerful classical music stopped, and guests began whispering nervously while looking toward the central display case where historical jewelry was showcased for a charity auction.
Guest One: The Sterling family heirloom is missing from the glass box!
Guest Two: That diamond ring is worth over two million dollars! Who could have taken it?
Sarah turned around quickly to check on Lily, but her heart dropped into her stomach. Lily was not on the velvet bench anymore. Panicking, Sarah scanned the crowded room, pushing past wealthy donors and hotel staff. A sudden loud crash rang out near the marble pillar under the American flag, followed immediately by a sharp scream that made Sarah's blood run cold.
Lily: MOMMY! HELP ME!
Sarah sprinted across the polished marble floor, shoving people aside without caring about manners. When she broke through the circle of standing onlookers, her heart shattered into pieces. Lily was lying on the cold floor next to a shattered glass cocktail table. A dark red trickle of blood ran down from a cut on her small forehead, mixing with the frantic tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
Sarah: Lily! Oh my baby, what happened to you?
Lily: MOMMY, I DIDN'T TAKE IT!
Standing right above them was Richard Sterling. He looked down at the bleeding child and her frantic mother with a harsh, cold face. He reached into Lily's fallen purse, pulled out a heavy velvet box, and opened it to show the shining diamond ring inside to the crowd around them.
Richard: I caught this little thief red-handed! She took the ring from the display and hid it in her bag!
Sarah: You are lying! She is a child! She does not even know what that is!
Richard: I saw her reach into the display case myself. When I tried to grab the ring back, she stumbled into the table and broke it.
Lily: He grabbed my arm really hard, Mommy! He threw me down!
Sarah: You put your hands on my daughter? You physically attacked a seven-year-old child?
Richard: She is a criminal, just like her family. Security, call the police department immediately!
The crowd began murmuring in agreement, conditioned to believe the powerful billionaire over a distressed, poorly dressed woman. People shook their heads in judgment, pointing their phone cameras at the weeping mother holding her bleeding child on the floor. Sarah felt a burning rage rising from deep inside her chest, hotter than any anger she had ever felt in her entire life.
