A Cruel Stepmother Learns Who Really Owns The Mansion

Within thirty minutes, two uniform security guards employed by the private gated community arrived at the front entrance of the mansion. Hannah stood at the top of the grand staircase, her beige silk robe tied neatly, looking calm and totally in control of her life again. Mark helped his mother pack her three large suitcases, rolling them down the wide hallway in total silence.

Margarethe walked down the stairs slowly, her head low, no longer looking like the proud woman who had walked into the bedroom with a heavy pot hours ago. Her face was still pale from the humiliation, and her cheek was visibly swollen from the slap she had received.

Margarethe: Mark, you cannot let her do this to me. Where am I supposed to stay tonight?

Mark: You can stay at a cheap motel downtown, Mom. I will pay for two nights, but that is all I can do.

Hannah: Make sure she turns over the spare house keys and the gate clicker right now, Guard.

The senior security officer stepped forward, holding out his hand calmly. Margarethe reached into her designer handbag with shaking fingers and dropped the silver key ring into the officer's palm. The guards then escorted her out the massive double front doors, watching as she was loaded into a waiting taxi cab on the driveway.

Mark stood in the grand foyer, staring at the empty driveway as the yellow cab drove away through the iron gates. He turned back toward his wife, feeling small and deeply ashame of his lies. He knew he had almost lost his marriage and his comfortable life because he failed to set boundaries with his abusive mother.

Mark: Hannah, I am so sorry. I should have told her the truth the day she moved in here.

Hannah: You lied to her, and you let her treat me like trash for months. That ends today, Mark.

Mark: I will do whatever it takes to fix this. I promise I will get us into marriage counseling tomorrow morning.

Hannah looked down at her husband from the landing. She knew it would take a long time to rebuild trust, but the toxic cloud that had filled her home was finally gone. For the first time in months, peace returned to the grand estate under the bright Texas sky.
