Two days passed before David left the estate to visit his main corporate office.
The large glass skyscraper sat right in the busy center of downtown.
His assistant handed him an envelope marked urgent and very confidential.
David opened the paper and found a detailed bank transfer history inside.
Large sums of money had been moved out of the family trust account.
The transfers had started six months ago, right after his wedding day.
David: Who authorized these massive money transfers from the fund?
Assistant: Your mother was the only person with access until recently.
David: Did she move this money to her private bank accounts?
Assistant: No sir, the funds were sent to a corporate holding company.
David: Who owns that holding company, Marcus?
Assistant: The legal documents list your wife's maiden name as owner.
David felt a sudden cold chill run down his entire back.
He stared at the signature at the bottom of the bank sheet.
It was clearly Clara's handwriting, bold and completely unchanged.
He realized his mother had been auditing the family trust fund accounts.
She had visited the house that fateful day to confront Clara directly.
He called his mother's home phone number with trembling hands.
David: Mother, please answer me, I need to talk to you.
Eleanor: Have you finally decided to open your eyes, David?
David: Did Clara steal money from the family estate account?
Eleanor: She was draining the trust before I caught her red-handed.
David: Why didn't you just tell me the simple truth?
Eleanor: You would never believe me without absolute hard proof!
David closed his eyes as total guilt flooded his heavy heart.
He remembered pushing his own mother down onto the cold floor.
He remembered choosing to trust Clara's soft tears over Eleanor's quiet words.
David: Where are you right now, Mother?
Eleanor: I am sitting at my lawyer's office downtown.
David: Stay right there, I am coming to see you immediately.
