Elena walked slowly behind Julian into the quiet wood office.
The room had big glass windows looking over the garden.
Julian sat down behind his wide dark oak desk.
He gently placed his resting son inside a portable crib.
The small child fell asleep almost right away now.
Julian looked across the desk at the young tired woman.
Julian: How long has Victoria treated you like this?
Elena: Since the day I started working here, sir.
Julian: Why did you not come to me earlier?
Elena: I was afraid you would fire me without pay.
Elena pressed her trembling hands tightly together in her lap.
She explained how she needed money for her own child.
Her daughter had a bad heart condition requiring costly care.
Julian listened carefully to every word she said today.
His heart filled with deep respect for her great courage.
Julian: You saved my son today, Elena.
Elena: I only did what any caring mother would do.
Julian: You showed more love than his own mother did.
Julian picked up a gold pen from his leather desk pad.
He wrote a name and a phone number on paper.
He pushed the paper across the smooth wooden desk top.
Julian: This is my family doctor's personal phone number.
Elena: I cannot afford a private family doctor, sir.
Julian: I will pay for all your daughter's medical bills.
Elena opened her mouth in total shock and disbelief.
Fresh tears filled her eyes as she looked at him.
Elena: Sir, that is far too much money!
Julian: It is small reward for saving my precious boy.
Outside the office doors, raised voices sounded in the hall.
Victoria was arguing loudly with two police officers outside.
Julian had called the local authorities from his personal computer.
He wanted a full report made about the incident today.
Victoria tried to explain herself to the tall officer.
Victoria: I am the owner of this grand house!
Officer: Ma'am, you need to come with us now.
The sound of heavy footsteps moved toward the main entrance.
Victoria was led away through the front double doors.
The grand house became completely silent and peaceful once again.
Julian turned his full attention back to Elena's future.
Julian: You are no longer the house maid here.
Elena: Am I being fired from the estate, sir?
Julian: No. I want you to be my head nanny.
Elena looked up with a bright light in her eyes.
She knew that her life was changing forever today.
