The Master Returns

When She Walked the Baby on a Leash

The heavy front double doors slammed open with a deafening crash that echoed like a gunshot through the opulent foyer and down the long corridor. A fair-skinned American man with subtle freckles and visible skin pores burst through the entrance, his tailored suit jacket flying open as he sprinted desperately toward the commotion. His face was etched with sudden, frantic alarm, having heard the echoes of distress from the foyer. Heavy running footsteps pounded relentlessly against the hardwood floor, closing the distance in seconds as his eyes scanned the horrifying tableau unfolding before him. He saw the maid collapsed on the floor in tears, saw the framed USA flag painting watching from the wall, and worst of all, saw the green silk dress and the leash.

Richard: What in God's name is happening here?

He didn't wait for an answer, his instincts taking over as he surged past the terrified maid and dropped immediately to his knees beside the tiny, trembling child. The heavy suspense drone faded instantly, replaced by a tense, breathless quiet as he gathered the crying baby into his arms. He pulled the infant tight against his chest, his hands shaking slightly as he checked the baby's tiny arms and legs for bruises. His breath hitched in his throat when his fingers brushed against the tender, discolored skin where the harsh treatment had left its mark. A suffocating wave of guilt and blinding fury crashed over him simultaneously, knowing he had trusted the wrong person to protect his flesh and blood.

Richard: Shh, I've got you. Daddy's right here, I've got you.

The baby's cries quieted into soft, shivering whimpers against his shoulder, anchoring him to the horrific reality of what had been happening right under his roof. He looked up slowly, his eyes shifting from the child in his arms to the woman standing a few feet away. The woman in the green dress merely adjusted her posture, smoothing the fabric of her skirt with an infuriating display of calm nonchalance. She offered a sickeningly sweet smile, as if she were holding a pet dog rather than a human child on a makeshift leash. Richard felt the blood roar in his ears, a hot, blinding rush of adrenaline that completely obliterated his capacity for rational thought. The pristine white crown molding above them seemed to spin as the sheer magnitude of the betrayal settled deep into his bones.

Clara pulled herself up slightly from the floor, wiping the hot tears from her bruised cheeks with a trembling hand as she looked up at Richard. The desperation in her eyes was absolute, a silent plea for him to finally open his eyes to the monster he had brought into their home. She pointed a shaking finger directly at the woman in the green dress, her voice cracking with the terrible truth she had hidden in terror for weeks.

Clara: She hurts the baby every time you leave! I tried to stop her, look at my face!

Richard stared down at the maid, taking in the purple bruise starkly visible against her skin, and then looked back down at the faint, angry marks on the infant's delicate limbs. The pieces clicked together in his mind with devastating clarity, turning every lingering doubt into a raging inferno of absolute wrath. His jaw locked so tightly that a muscle ticked furiously in his cheek, his expression twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. A rising intense orchestral swell began to build in the background, climbing higher and higher with every passing second as the trap closed in around the cold, unrepentant woman.
