Unbeknownst to Victoria, the heavy wooden side gate of the estate had clicked open just moments earlier. David had returned home early from his morning business meetings, carrying a large, beautiful bouquet of long-stemmed red roses for his mother’s upcoming seventy-fifth birthday celebration. He wore a sharp navy blue suit and polished black shoes, his heart light as he walked along the side path toward the sunlit pool area. He had planned to surprise his mother with news that the legal papers protecting her lifelong residency in the house were fully signed and notarized.
As David turned the corner near the hedge, the horrifying scene unfolded directly before his eyes. He saw his wife leaning over the water, her heel pressed against his mother’s fingers, watching with a sickening smile as the elderly woman struggled to stay afloat. The sudden shock struck David like a physical blow, freezing him in his tracks for a fraction of a second as his brain tried to process the unbelievable cruelty playing out in front of him.
David: What... what are you doing?!
The heavy bouquet of red roses slipped from David’s hands, hitting the stone tiles with a dull thud as individual red petals scattered across the ground. Victoria froze, her face draining of all color as she spun around to face the voice. Her vicious smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer panic as she saw her husband standing less than ten feet away, his face contorted in shock and rising fury.
Victoria: David! Oh my goodness, David, thank God you are here!
David: Get away from her right now!
Victoria: David, it was an accident! She slipped and fell into the deep end! I was trying to reach down and pull her out!
Grandmother Rose: David... help me! She pushed me!
David did not waste another second listening to his wife’s frantic lies. He sprinted across the stone patio, shoving Victoria roughly to the side as he dove down onto his knees at the edge of the pool deck. He reached his long, strong arms deep into the water, wrapping his hands tightly around his mother’s wrist and under her arms. With a desperate surge of physical strength, David hauled his soaking-wet, shivering mother out of the deep water and onto the dry stone floor.
David: I’ve got you, Mom! I’ve got you! Breathe, just breathe!
Grandmother Rose: She... she stepped on my hand, David! She wanted me to drown!
David: Shh, save your strength. You are safe now. I am right here with you.
Rose collapsed against David’s chest, coughing up water and shivering violently in the warm morning air. David wrapped his navy suit jacket around her dripping shoulders, his own expensive clothes getting completely soaked in the process. His heart pounded wildly against his ribs as he held his fragile mother tight, feeling the full weight of the horrifying danger she had just escaped. He looked up at Victoria, his dark eyes burning with an intense, uncontrollable rage that made the younger woman back away toward the patio table.
Victoria: David, listen to me! She is confused! She lost her balance near the edge and I was trying to grab her dress!
David: SAY THAT AGAIN! CALL 911 RIGHT NOW!
Victoria: David, please, let’s go inside and talk about this privately before we involve the police!
David: I SAW EVERYTHING, VICTORIA! I saw your shoe on her hand! You stood there and watched her drown!
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat as she realized the full reality of her situation. The mask of the sweet, caring wife had been ripped away completely in broad daylight. She stumbled backward, her high heels catching on the loose rose petals scattered across the patio floor. Her hands trembled as she looked from David’s furious face to the shivering old woman sitting wrapped in his jacket, realizing that her grand plan to claim the family fortune had destroyed her life in a single instant.
