Mark pulled out his black metal card and handed it to the gate attendant.
Chloe leaned against the counter with her expensive designer handbag hanging low.
Mark: Two for the priority suite, please. We are ready to board early.
Attendant: Of course, sir. Let me just swipe your card for the terminal fees.
The machine let out a loud, harsh double beep that echoed across the desk.
Attendant: I am sorry, sir. This card has been declined by the issuing bank.
Mark: That is impossible. Try it again. It has a unlimited line of credit.
The attendant swiped the heavy metal card through the reader a second time.
The red light flashed once more on the small terminal screen.
Attendant: Sir, the system says the primary account has been frozen by the holder.
Chloe frowned and turned her head to look at Mark with irritation.
Chloe: Mark, what is going on? You said everything was taken care of for us.
Mark: Just give me a second! Sarah must have messed up the travel notice again.
Mark reached into his wallet and pulled out three more corporate credit cards.
He handed them to the agent with a hasty, nervous gesture.
Mark: Try any of these. They are all linked to my executive business account.
The agent ran the second card, but the same loud error tone buzzed instantly.
Attendant: Sir, all corporate lines associated with your name are currently locked.
Sarah walked up quietly and stood two steps behind them with her arms folded.
Sarah: Is there a problem with the payment, Mark?
Mark whirled around with a furious glare fixed on his face.
Mark: Did you do something to the accounts? Stop playing these stupid games!
Sarah: I did not play a game. I simply protected my personal estate, Mark.
Chloe: Sarah, you are being completely childish! Mark earned those corporate perks!
Sarah: Mark did not earn a single cent in that marketing firm without my father's fund.
Mark stepped closer to Sarah and lowered his voice into a sharp whisper.
Mark: You are embarrassing me in front of my senior staff, Sarah.
Sarah: Chloe is not your staff. She is the woman you tried to give my money to.
Mark's face went pale as he realized Sarah knew about the paperwork.
Mark: That was just a preliminary draft for an internal corporate restructuring!
Sarah: Restructuring my family wealth into her private trust is called fraud, Mark.
The gate agent looked between the three of them with wide, surprised eyes.
Attendant: Ma'am, if the cardholder is not approving, I cannot issue these gate passes.
Sarah: Do not issue them. In fact, cancel the entire flight plan immediately.
Mark: You cannot cancel the jet! I booked it under my company name!
Sarah: The company that belongs entirely to my holding firm as of twenty minutes ago.
Mark grabbed his phone and tried to call his corporate CFO in a panic.
The phone went straight to a recorded operator message indicating an expired account.
Chloe took a step back from Mark and crossed her arms with deep doubt.
Chloe: Mark, you told me you owned seventy percent of the total stock.
Sarah: He owns zero percent when he violates his prenuptial agreement, Chloe.
Mark stared at Sarah as if he were seeing a complete stranger before him.
The power balance had completely shifted in less than ten quiet minutes.
