The Spilled Tea On Oak

The morning sun poured through the massive windows of the grand estate, lighting up the polished hardwood oak floors and white crown molding. It was supposed to be a quiet Sunday morning, the kind where the aroma of fresh coffee and breakfast filled the high-ceilinged rooms. Richard adjusted his dark suit jacket, feeling the weight of another exhausting week on his shoulders. His wife, Clara, had been admitted to the hospital three days ago after a sudden, unexplained collapse, leaving him alone in the vast house with their eight-year-old daughter, Lily, and Clara's sister, Victoria.

Richard reached for his morning teacup, tilting the delicate porcelain over its saucer. Just as the steam rose toward his face, rapid bare footsteps echoed frantically down the hallway. Lily came sprinting into the grand foyer, her blue floral pajamas twisted around her knees, tears streaming down her freckled face. She was weeping hysterically, her small chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath while running as fast as her legs could carry her.

Lily: Daddy, don't drink it!

Richard: Lily, slow down! What is wrong, baby?

Richard froze, his hand trembling slightly as dark hot tea spilled over the rim, splashing loudly onto the white porcelain saucer. The sudden alarm in his daughter's voice chilled him to the bone. Before he could set the cup down, Lily tripped over the edge of the hallway rug and fell hard onto the polished wood, her knees taking the full force of the impact. A small smartphone slid from her grip, landing screen-up just inches away from her small hands.

Lily: Daddy... please, you have to stop!

Lily reached toward the smartphone, her breath coming in ragged, trembling gasps. A fresh bruise was already forming on her left cheek, turning dark against her fair skin. Richard dropped the teacup onto the table, the hot liquid pooling across the dark wood, and took a step toward his daughter. But before he could reach her, Victoria stepped out from the adjacent hallway, her glittering silver gown rustling softly against the doorframe.

Victoria crouched down quickly, her blonde hair falling over her face as her sharp eyes locked onto the crying child. Her hand shot out, her fingers tightening firmly around Lily's arm to keep the young girl from grabbing the phone. Lily tried to pull away, pointing an urgent, shaking finger toward the illuminated screen lying on the floor.

Victoria: Lily, that is enough of this nonsense right now.

Lily: Let go of me! Daddy, look! She will hurt Mommy!

Richard: Victoria, take your hands off my daughter this second.

Victoria: Richard, she is hysterical. She had a nightmare about her mother and she is losing her mind.

Richard looked down at the active video call displayed on the phone screen. The harsh glare revealed Clara lying unconscious in a sterile hospital bed, an oxygen nasal cannula strapped across her face, surrounded by buzzing medical monitors. Beside Clara's bed in the video stood a figure holding a clear medical vial, preparing an injection into the IV tube. Richard felt his stomach drop as he realized the truth was far worse than any nightmare.
