The Broken Plate On The Floor

When My Daughter Dropped Her Plate I Found My Past

Mark stood in the hallway of his suburban house and adjusted his silk tie.

He had just returned from an important meeting at his law firm downtown.

His career was going better than ever after years of hard work.

He looked around the bright hallway that he had recently renovated himself.

Everything in his life felt stable, safe, and completely predictable.

Then he heard a strange scraping sound coming from the kitchen nearby.

His three-year-old daughter Lily was carefully waddling down the hallway.

She held a bright white ceramic plate balanced between her tiny hands.

On the plate were two full turkey sandwiches wrapped in paper towels.

Mark smiled softly as he watched his little girl walk so carefully.

He assumed she was bringing a afternoon snack into the living room.

But Lily did not turn toward the soft sofa or the TV.

She walked straight toward the narrow storage hallway near the basement door.

Mark stepped forward with a sudden look of deep confusion on his face.

Mark: Lily, what are you doing with that plate?

The sudden sound of his stern voice startled the little toddler instantly.

Lily jumped slightly and lost her grip on the heavy white plate.

The plate crashed down onto the polished wooden flooring with a bang.

Sandwiches tumbled across the floor and landed near the white baseboard molding.

Lily looked up at her father with wide and frightened brown eyes.

Mark felt a wave of immediate regret for speaking so sharply to her.

He bent down to help his little daughter pick up the mess.

His wife Sarah came running out of the kitchen with quick steps.

She looked strangely pale as she eyed the spilled food on the floor.

Sarah: Oh no, Mark, you scared her so much!

Mark: I did not mean to startle her like that at all.

Mark: I was just surprised she was carrying food over here.

Sarah quickly grabbed Lily by her hand and pulled her backward tightly.

Mark noticed that Sarah was trembling as she stood in the hallway.

Her face had lost all of its usual warm and rosy color.

He wondered why a dropped plate of sandwiches made her so nervous.

Lily pointed her tiny finger at the low white storage door built into the wall.

Lily: The girl needs her lunch now, Daddy.

Mark froze entirely on the spot as he heard his daughter speak.
