The Silent Shadow Above

When His Stepmother Stood Silent On The Mansion Balcony

Richard pulled his luxury sedan into the long gravel driveway of his family mansion.

The afternoon sun cast deep shadows across the white stone pillars of the entrance.

He felt a strange knot in his stomach as he turned off the engine.

His young daughter Maya had been spending the weekend under the care of his new wife, Evelyn.

Richard had married Evelyn six months after his late wife passed away.

He wanted Maya to have a caring mother figure in her life.

However, tension had grown between Evelyn and the young child over recent weeks.

Richard grabbed his briefcase from the passenger seat and walked quickly toward the front doors.

The large front doors were slightly unlocked, which immediately caught his attention.

He stepped inside the grand foyer and felt an eerie silence hanging in the air.

Richard: Maya, Daddy is home!

No answer came from the wide marble living room or the playroom upstairs.

Richard walked toward the central staircase while listening carefully for any sounds.

He suddenly heard a faint gasping sound coming from near the bottom step.

His heart hammered against his chest as he rushed around the corner.

Little Maya lay curled up on the plush rug, clutching her tiny chest weakly.

Her face looked pale, and her breathing was dangerously thin and quick.

Richard: Maya, sweetheart, look at me!

Richard dropped his briefcase and fell to his knees beside his daughter.

He gathered her frail body into his arms with trembling hands.

Maya tried to speak, but she could only produce a soft whimpering sound.

Maya: Daddy... cannot breathe...

Richard searched her small pockets immediately for her vital asthma inhaler.

The pockets were completely empty, and her school bag was nowhere in sight.

Panic surged through Richard as he held his daughter closer to his chest.

He glanced up toward the landing of the second floor balcony.

Evelyn stood motionless at the top railing, clad in a striking blue dress.

She was holding a small silver object tightly inside her folded hands.

She looked down at the scene below without moving a single muscle.

Richard: Call ninety-one-one right now, Evelyn!

Evelyn: She fell down the carpeted stairs, Richard.

Richard: She is having an asthma attack!

Evelyn: It happened so quickly that I froze in place.

Richard looked into Evelyn's calm eyes and felt a sudden wave of ice in his veins.

Her tone lacked any trace of panic, concern, or urgency.

He realized that his wife had been watching his child suffer without moving to help.

Richard reached into his jacket to grab his own cell phone with shaking fingers.

He quickly punched the three numbers and pressed the phone against his ear.

Richard: Send an emergency medical team to four four Hilltop Lane immediately!

Operator: Sir, help is on the way, stay on the line.

Richard: My four-year-old daughter cannot breathe, please hurry!

Richard scooped Maya into his arms and stood up from the floor.

He glared up at Evelyn as she slowly walked down the marble steps.

Evelyn: Do not look at me like that, Richard.

Richard: Where is her medication?

Evelyn: I think she misplaced it earlier today.

Richard noticed a plastic cap sticking out from the side pocket of Evelyn's dress.

He reached out and snatched the blue object from her coat before she could pull back.

It was Maya's personal prescription inhaler, cool against his hot palm.

Richard: You had it in your pocket the whole time!

Evelyn: I was just holding it for safekeeping!

Richard: You let her suffer while holding her life in your hand!

The distant sound of loud sirens began to echo down the peaceful suburban street.
