The Pearl Necklace At Dusk

When Her Stepmother Pushed Her Down The Dallas Stairs

The glowing afternoon light poured through the tall windows of the grand Dallas mansion.

Clara adjusted the hem of her emerald sequin dress in front of the golden mirror.

Her mind drifted back to the reading of her late father's last legal will.

The family estate in Texas had been left entirely under her personal care.

Her stepmother Margarethe had not hidden her bitter disappointment about the money.

Margarethe walked softly into the room carrying a dark velvet jewelry box.

Margarethe: You look quite lovely for the charity gala tonight, Clara.

Clara: Thank you, but I still miss my father every single day.

Margarethe: He wanted you to wear these antique family pearls tonight.

Clara turned around slowly and looked at the gleaming white gems.

She noticed how tightly Margarethe was gripping the velvet box handles.

Clara: I did not know father kept those in the master safe.

Margarethe: There are many financial secrets in this house you do not know.

Margarethe stepped closer until she stood directly behind Clara's back.

The atmosphere inside the vast marble hallway suddenly felt unusually cold and heavy.

Clara felt the heavy cold pearls touch against her bare collarbone.

Margarethe: Hold completely still while I fasten the gold clasp for you.

Clara: Please do not pull so hard on my neck, Margarethe.

Margarethe: You always complain whenever I try to help you out.

Clara looked at her stepmother's sharp reflection in the polished wall glass.

Margarethe's eyes were fixed on the wide open edge of the staircase balcony.

Clara: Why are we standing so close to the open ledge, Margarethe?

Margarethe: The natural light from the high skylight is much better right here.

Clara felt a sudden uneasy panic rising inside her chest.

She moved to step away toward the safety of the carpeted hallway.

Margarethe's hands gripped the delicate silk back of her emerald dress.

Margarethe: You are not going anywhere until this estate issue gets settled.

Clara: Take your hands off me right now, Margarethe!

A harsh tension stretched across the second-story floor of the grand house.

Clara tried to pull forward toward the bedroom doors.

Margarethe gave a violent forward shove with both of her hands.

Clara lost her footing on the slick marble floor near the edge.

The strong gold thread holding the pearl necklace suddenly snapped apart.

Hundreds of small white pearls tumbled down into the open air below.

Clara gasped in shock as her balance failed near the top step.

She tipped forward off the balcony edge toward the floor below.

The sudden sound of heavy footsteps echoed from the front foyer entrance.

Mark kicked open the heavy double doors and sprinted inside the house.

He saw Clara falling through the air from the second story floor.

Mark lunged across the smooth white foyer with his hands outstretched.

He caught Clara firmly in his arms right before she hit the ground.

They slid across the smooth floor together near the white pillars.

Clara was shaking uncontrollably as she held his dark jacket.

Clara: She pushed me right off the top floor ledge, Mark!

Mark: Look at me, Clara! Stay focused on my voice!

Clara: She tried to hurt me because of father's last inheritance will!

Mark raised his eyes upward toward the high balcony railing above.

Margarethe stood motionless near the top, staring down without any expression.

Mark: I swear I will make her pay for what she did!
