Mark drove his black SUV down the quiet suburban driveway toward the mansion gates.
He parked near the front entrance and stepped out into the bright afternoon sun.
Inside the mansion, Victoria was standing on the upper balcony stair ledge.
She was examining the gold locket in her hand with a smug look on her face.
Clara had followed her out into the hallway, desperate to recover her mother's precious gift.
Clara: Give it back to me, Victoria! Please, it is all I have left!
Victoria: Stay back, Clara, or I will throw this right over the balcony edge!
Clara reached out her small hands, stepping closer to the white marble railing.
Clara: No! Please do not break it!
Victoria smiled coldly and held the locket out over the empty foyer space below.
She intentionally dropped the gold locket toward the hard marble floor downstairs.
Clara lunged forward toward the edge to grab the falling locket in panic.
Victoria raised her hand and forcefully pushed Clara backward away from the ledge.
Clara fell onto the polished floor, crying out in shock and fear as the locket shattered below.
At that exact moment, Mark burst through the heavy grand entrance doors downstairs.
He saw the gold locket hit the ground and heard his daughter's sharp cry of terror.
Mark: No! Clara!
Mark rushed across the wide entrance hall and sprinted up the sweeping marble stairs.
He found Clara sitting on the upper landing, sobbing uncontrollably while holding her arm.
Mark knelt beside his daughter and wrapped his arms around her small shoulders.
Mark: Clara! Are you okay? What happened up here?
Clara: Daddy! She tried to get rid of Mommy's locket and she shoved me away!
Victoria stood near the railing, her face turning pale as she looked down at Mark.
She quickly smoothed down her dark blue shirt and tried to adopt a calm expression.
Victoria: Mark, you misunderstood everything! She just lost her balance while reaching for something!
Victoria: It was completely an accident, I tried to catch her!
Clara looked up at her father with tear-stained cheeks and shook her head frantically.
Clara: No, Daddy! She deliberately shoved me away and threw Mommy's picture down!
Mark stared at the shattered gold pieces resting on the bright marble floor below.
He remembered the legal documents his lawyer had shown him just an hour earlier.
A surge of intense anger rose inside Mark's chest as he realized the truth.
He stood up abruptly from the landing, his eyes locked onto Victoria's trembling face.
Mark: You have been lying to me this whole time.
Victoria: Mark, please listen to reason! Why would I ever hurt your daughter?
Mark stepped forward, narrowing the distance between himself and his deceitful wife.
Mark: Because you wanted the money, and you wanted her out of the way!
Victoria backed up against the marble railing, her confidence evaporating completely.
