Crashing Down To Reality

The Wicked Stepmother Betrayed My Family For Money

Victoria lost her footing entirely and fell backward over the kitchen island, tumbling over the top of the smooth stone counter with a loud, chaotic crash. Expensive glass flower vases, decorative bowls, and tall crystal water glasses were swept off the edge, smashing violently into a thousand sparkling pieces across the white floor. The sound of shattering glass echoed through the giant open-concept house, a harsh physical end to the luxurious illusion she had spent years building.

She landed heavily on the floor on the other side of the island, gasping for air, her gold dress torn at the seam and her styled hair completely disheveled. She scrambled backward on her hands and knees, terrified by the raw rage radiating from the man she had thought she could control. Small cuts from the broken crystal began to bleed against her golden dress, but Mark didn't care about her pain for even a fraction of a second. His only concern was the safety of his family.

Mark immediately turned his back on her, rushing straight back to the corner where the two girls were crouching in fear. He dropped to his knees again, sliding through the safe space free of glass, and wrapped both girls in a massive, protective embrace. He pulled them so close against his chest that he could feel every breath they took, burying his face into their hair as tears finally spilled over his eyelashes and ran down his face. The overwhelming relief of holding them safe overwhelmed him completely.

The smaller girl wrapped her arms around Mark's neck, holding on with all the strength her little body possessed. "Daddy?" she whispered softly, her tiny voice trembling with hope and uncertainty as she used the word for the very first time in her life. She had spent years being told by Victoria that she was an unwanted burden, an outcast who had no right to belong anywhere. Hearing the word spoken aloud broke Mark's heart into a million pieces and put it back together all at once.

Mark held her tighter, weeping openly now as he kissed the top of her head. "Yes, sweetheart, I'm your daddy," Mark sobbed, his chest rising and falling heavily. "I didn't know... I swear to God I didn't know you were alive. But I've got you now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise you, on my life, you are safe now." The older girl, who had protected her little sister through months of Victoria's hidden abuse, let out a long, heavy sigh of exhaustion and rested her forehead against Mark's shoulder.

Behind them, Victoria groaned in pain, slowly pulling herself up by clutching the edge of the kitchen counter. Her face was twisted with hatred, her manicured nails digging into the stone as she glared at the scene of real family love playing out before her. She tried to speak, to utter another venomous insult or threat about calling her corporate lawyers, but the sheer intensity of the atmosphere in the room silenced her before she could form a single word.
