The afternoon heat beat down mercilessly against the white flagstone patio of the Sterling estate, but Maya was shivering so violently that her teeth rattled in her jaw.
Her black domestic uniform was drenched through, cold chlorinated water running in streams across the polished tiles around her knees.
Victoria: Get your filthy hands off him right now! Step away from my boy, you disgusting monster!
Maya: Mrs. Sterling, please, he swallowed half the water in the deep end! He couldn't keep his head above the coping stones!
Victoria: Shut your mouth! Don't you dare touch him! Help! Someone call the police on this psycho!
Maya kept both arms wrapped tightly around four-year-old Toby, pressing the boy against her chest while he coughed hard against her neck.
Tires screeched viciously across the gravel driveway beyond the privacy hedge. A black German SUV roared into the courtyard and braked so hard the chassis rocked.
The driver's door flew open. Julian Sterling leapt out onto the driveway, letting his leather briefcase tumble into the grass as he ran toward the pool.
Julian: Toby! What is happening out here? Why is my son soaking wet?
Victoria rushed forward, her beige silk dress rustling as she wrenched Toby directly out of Maya's wet hands.
Victoria: Julian! Thank God you made it home! She tried to drown him! She threw our little boy into the eight-foot marker!
Julian froze in place, his face turning pale before flushing into sudden, uncontrollable fury.
Julian: You did what? You laid your filthy hands on my only boy?
Maya: Mr. Sterling, no! Please, God, no! That isn't what happened at all!
Julian: I opened my home to you! I pay you to clean my floors, and you try to murder my heir?
Julian took two aggressive strides forward, raising his heavy fist into the air, his knuckles bone-white with rage.
Toby: Daddy, no! Stop! Don't hit her!
The toddler shrieked at the top of his lungs, kicking against Victoria's silk dress and stretching his wet hands back toward Maya.
Julian: Toby, stay back! She is dangerous!
Toby: Maya jumped in to pull me up, Daddy! She didn't push me!
Julian's hand remained frozen three inches from Maya's cheek, his chest heaving under his tailored white dress shirt.
Julian: Toby... what are you talking about?
Toby buried his face into Julian's leg, sobbing hysterically while raising one trembling finger toward Victoria.
Toby: Mommy kicked my toy truck into the deep water... and then she walked away when I fell in!
A suffocating silence gripped the patio, leaving Victoria staring at the child with sudden, wide-eyed terror.
