The Kitchen Phone Call Overheard

The Wealthy Boss Overheard His Maid Ask For Twenty Dollars

The bright morning sun streamed through the massive glass windows of the grand California mansion.

Sarah stood near the white marble kitchen island in her crisp red uniform dress and clean white apron.

She held her small crying baby close against her chest with one gentle arm.

Her left hand held her smartphone tightly against her trembling ear.

She looked down at the nearly empty metal can of infant formula sitting on the pristine counter.

Panic flared inside her chest as she counted her remaining pennies.

Sarah: Mom, can you lend me twenty dollars until Friday?

Her voice trembled softly while she spoke into the small receiver.

Sarah: Owen's formula is almost gone, and I am terrified.

She bit her lower lip to stop herself from sobbing out loud in the quiet house.

Her mother sighed deeply over the static filled phone line.

Mother: Sweetheart, I barely have five dollars in my own bank account today.

Sarah swallowed hard as tears welled up in her weary eyes.

Sarah: I will pay you back as soon as my paycheck comes through.

She did not know that someone was standing right behind her in the hallway archway.

Julian Sterling stood quietly in his tailored black business suit with his hands in his pockets.

He was a successful corporate executive who had inherited this vast estate two years ago.

He watched his young maid with a serious and deeply thoughtful expression.

Julian knew that Sarah was always punctual, extremely hardworking, and deeply respectful.

He had hired her three months ago through a high end domestic staffing agency.

Seeing her fight back desperate tears over twenty dollars hit a dark emotional chord deep within him.

His handsome brow furrowed as a sudden memory flashed across his mind.

Sarah gently set the baby down in a soft portable bassinet near the counter.

She wiped her red cheeks with the back of her hand quickly.

Sarah: It is okay, Mom, I will figure something out before tonight.

She ended the call and took a deep, shaky breath to calm her racing heart.

When she turned around to pick up a cleaning cloth, she saw Julian standing near the doorframe.

Her face flushed with deep embarrassment as she smoothed down her white apron.

Sarah: Mr. Sterling, I am so sorry if I disturbed your morning routine.

Julian shook his head slowly and stepped closer to the counter.

Julian: You did not disturb me at all, Sarah.

He stared at the tiny baby boy resting peacefully in the cloth bassinet.

Julian: How old is little Owen now?

Sarah: He is just four months old today, sir.

She gripped the edge of the marble island tightly with her cold fingers.

Julian: Does your family live anywhere near this city?

Sarah: My mother lives two hours away, but she struggles financially as well.

Julian looked closely at the young woman's tired face and familiar bright green eyes.

A strange feeling crept into his mind as he stared at her facial features.

Julian: Did you grow up in upstate New York before moving here?

Sarah looked at him in total surprise and nodded her head slowly.

Sarah: Yes, I lived in a small town called Oakridge until I turned eighteen.

Julian felt a sudden chill run down his spine at the mention of that town name.

Julian: Please take a break and rest for a few minutes, Sarah.

Sarah: Thank you, sir, but I have plenty of cleaning work left to finish.

Julian turned around silently without saying another word to her.

He walked quickly down the long polished hardwood hallway toward his private corner office.
