The Contract of Protection

Claire: This room is bigger than my entire apartment...

Marcus: It's the executive recovery suite. The top orthopedic surgeons just finished dressing your back wounds.

Claire: The doctor said I need three weeks of complete bed rest. How am I supposed to pay my bills?

Marcus: Look at the table beside you.

Claire turned her head carefully, glancing at a thick leather-bound legal folder lying next to a vase of fresh lilies.

Claire: What is this? A settlement agreement?

Marcus: It's a personal employment contract directly with the Vance Estate.

Claire: Employment? Doing what? I can barely walk right now!

Marcus: You protected my son without thinking twice. My late wife passed away two years ago, and since then, I have hired four different nannies. None of them cared for Leo. They cared for my bank account.

Claire: I'm not a nanny, Mr. Vance. I'm a mother trying to survive.

Marcus: That makes you far more qualified than anyone I've ever hired. The contract guarantees an annual salary of two hundred thousand dollars, full health insurance, and paid tuition for your daughter at any private school in the state.

Claire: Two hundred thousand? Are you insane? That's a life-changing amount of money!

Marcus: To me, it is a tiny fraction of what my son's life is worth. In exchange, you and your daughter will move into the east wing of my penthouse estate. You will oversee Leo's care and daily security.

Claire: Move into your home? I don't even know you!

Marcus: You saved his life, Claire. I trust you with my entire legacy. More than I trust my own board of directors.

Claire: What if I say no? What if I just want to go back to my normal life?

Marcus: Your normal life was working double shifts for minimum wage while a careless manager risked your physical safety. Is that really what you want for your daughter?

Claire: My daughter... Lily deserves so much better than what I've been giving her.

Marcus: Then sign the document. Let me clear your debts, pay off your home mortgage, and secure your future.

Claire: There has to be a catch. Nobody gives away this kind of wealth without wanting something else.

Marcus: The catch is absolute loyalty. My family is targeted by corporate rivals, former relatives, and greedy executives daily. I need someone around Leo whose heart cannot be bought by my enemies.

Claire: You think someone would try to hurt Leo?

Marcus: My late wife's brother is currently suing me for control of Leo's inheritance trust fund. He will do anything to destroy my family stability before the court date next month.

Claire: That's horrible... A uncle turning against his own nephew?

Marcus: Greed turns blood relatives into predators, Claire. That's why I recognize true honor when I see it.

Claire: Where do I sign?

Marcus: Right at the bottom of page twelve. Welcome to the family, Claire.

Claire: I'm not doing this for the mansion, Mr. Vance. I'm doing this because that little boy looked at me like he had nobody else holding him.

Marcus: He didn't. Until today.
