The Tacitus Estate stood like a palace overlooking the city, its marble halls, crystal chandeliers, and towering columns reflecting generations of wealth and influence. Inside the mansion, however, luxury could no longer hide the tension growing between members of the powerful family.
Emily Tacitus stood inside the upstairs sitting room wearing a soft pink robe. Tears streamed down her face as she tightly held a leather folder marked"Tacitus Family Legacy."
The document represented control of the family's businesses and properties.
For weeks, relatives had argued over who would inherit responsibility for the family empire after the aging patriarch announced his retirement.
Emily wanted no part of the conflict.
She only wanted to protect the child she was carrying.
Standing a few steps behind her was her mother-in-law, while two other female relatives continued arguing about the inheritance.
The conversation quickly became heated.
Voices grew louder.
Accusations filled the room.
Overwhelmed and frightened, Emily backed toward the open balcony doors, desperately trying to escape the argument.
"Please... stop."
No one listened.
Moments later, a loud scream echoed through the mansion.
Emily lost her balance near the balcony's stone railing.
Her terrified cry pierced the air as she fell backward into the open space below.
Time seemed to stop.
The women rushed to the balcony.
They leaned over the railing in complete horror as Emily continued falling toward the marble foyer several stories beneath them.
Their screams echoed throughout the estate.
Downstairs, Jonathan Tacitus had just entered the mansion after returning from an emergency business meeting.
The moment he heard the cries above him, he looked up.
His heart stopped.
Without thinking, he dropped everything and sprinted through the enormous marble hallway.
Every second mattered.
Every step brought him closer to an impossible choice.
There was no time to think.
Only time to act.
