Lily slowly walked toward the judge's bench.
Every eye in the courtroom followed her.
Her small hands trembled as she held out the pink recorder.
"My daddy gave this to me."
The judge accepted the device carefully.
"What is it?"
Lily wiped away her tears.
"He told me if anything bad ever happened... I should bring this to someone who tells the truth."
The prosecutor objected immediately.
"Your Honor, we don't know what's on that device."
The judge nodded.
"We're about to find out."
A court technician connected the recorder to the courtroom speakers.
Static crackled for a moment.
Then Jonathan Carter's familiar voice filled the silent courtroom.
"If you're hearing this..."
He paused.
"It means I was right."
Gasps spread through the gallery.
Jonathan continued.
"Victoria has been stealing money from the company for months. Tonight she threatened to poison me if I exposed her."
Victoria's face turned white.
The recording continued.
"I've hidden copies of every bank transfer in my office safe. Maria knows nothing about this. She's innocent."
Then another voice entered the recording.
Victoria's.
"You'll never make it to the police."
A loud crash echoed through the speakers.
The recording ended.
Complete silence.
No one moved.
The prosecutor slowly lowered his files.
Maria covered her face, sobbing with relief.
Detectives immediately stood and walked toward Victoria.
She attempted to leave the courtroom.
A bailiff blocked her path.
The judge looked directly at the officers.
"Place Victoria Carter under arrest for the murder of Jonathan Carter and for providing false testimony."
Handcuffs clicked shut as stunned reporters rushed from the courtroom to break the news.
Maria fell to her knees and hugged Lily tightly.
"You saved my life."
Lily smiled through tears.
