The streets of downtown Chicago buzzed with the sounds of traffic, distant sirens, and hurried footsteps. People walked past colorful graffiti walls without noticing the small figure sitting quietly against the cold concrete.
The boy looked no older than eight.
His clothes were dirty and torn, and soot covered much of his face. Yet beneath the grime, his bright blue eyes remained calm and watchful.
Most people avoided looking at him.
Some assumed he was homeless.
Others simply kept walking.
Then six-year-old Emma noticed him.
Holding a paper bag with a freshly made burger inside, she stopped beside the boy.
Emma wore a white winter coat and carried the innocence only children possess.
She looked at the boy for a moment.
Then smiled.
"Here, take it."
The boy looked surprised.
No one had spoken kindly to him all day.
Slowly, he accepted the burger.
"Thank you," he whispered.
At that exact moment, Emma's mother turned around and saw what her daughter was doing.
Fear immediately crossed her face.
"Emma!"
She hurried forward and gently pulled her daughter back.
"No! Get away from him!"
The little girl looked confused.
"Mom..."
She glanced toward the boy.
"He's hungry."
The words struck the woman deeply.
For a moment, she stared at the child sitting alone against the wall.
Then the boy slowly looked up.
Their eyes met.
Everything changed.
