The Silent Shadow In Foyer

The Stepmother Thought No One Saw What She Dropped

The grand estate sat quietly under the bright morning sun.

Elena adjusted her clean white apron as she walked across the marble foyer.

She had worked for the Vance family for nearly seven years.

Her main job was keeping the vast house clean and caring for young Leo.

Leo was the seven-month-old heir to the entire Vance fortune.

His mother had passed away shortly after he was born.

Six months later, Julian Vance married a woman named Victoria.

Victoria was young, elegant, and loved expensive gold dresses.

She also disliked the baby and treated the house staff poorly.

Elena kept her head down and focused entirely on her duties.

She carried a basket of freshly folded baby linens near the staircase.

Suddenly, she heard heavy footsteps on the upper balcony above.

Elena stopped near the base of the grand stairs and looked up.

Victoria stood near the carved wooden railing wearing a glittering gown.

In her hands, Victoria held a heavy bronze heirloom clock from the nursery.

The clock sat directly above the marble floor where Leo usually played.

Victoria looked around the quiet foyer with a cold expression.

She did not realize Elena was standing beneath the shadow of the archway.

Victoria leaned over the balcony railing with the heavy bronze object.

Her hands intentionally tilted forward to let the heavy piece fall.

Elena gasped loudly as she realized what was about to happen.

She dropped her laundry basket and sprinted across the polished floor.

The heavy bronze clock slipped from Victoria's hands into midair.

Elena slid on her knees across the smooth marble surface.

She caught the heavy heirloom safely in her arms just in time.

The hard metal grazed her arm, but the object did not shatter.

More importantly, it did not strike the lower baby play area.

Elena hugged the heavy bronze object tightly against her chest.

Tears of shock and relief spilled down her pale cheeks.

Her breath came in heavy, ragged gasps against the silence.

Up on the balcony, Victoria stood completely frozen in shock.

Her hands were still stretched out over the empty balcony air.

She stared down at Elena with wide, panicked eyes.

Neither of them moved for several long seconds.

Then the massive front double doors swung open with a heavy thud.

Julian Vance stepped into the bright foyer carrying his leather briefcase.

He stopped instantly when he saw his maid crying on the floor.

He noticed the heavy clock resting in her shaking hands.

Julian lowered his briefcase and rushed toward the stairs.

Julian: Elena, what on earth just happened here?

Elena: She dropped it on purpose, Mr. Vance!

Julian: What are you saying right now?

Elena: She tried to break it over Leo's play space!

Victoria: She is lying to you, Julian!

Julian: Be quiet up there, Victoria!

Julian turned toward the upper landing with total fury in his eyes.

He took the stairs three at a time with rapid footsteps.
