Metallic scraping rattled through the cold marble hallway of the Vance estate. The grand mansion was quiet during the evening party, but near the west wing wall, beneath the drape of the American flag, a quiet sobbing echoed from behind the paneling.
Hannah, the maid in her grey uniform, dropped her cleaning rag onto the polished floor. She pressed her ear flat against the white wall, her heart hammering in her chest.
Boy: Please... help me! Somebody please!
Hannah: Leo? Is that you in there? Oh sweet Lord, hold on baby!
Boy: It's dark! I can't breathe! She locked the latch!
Hannah scrambled across the hallway toward her tool tote. Her hands shook violently as her fingers closed around a heavy steel socket wrench. She ran back to the hidden seam near the baseboard, jamming the metal socket into the concealed latch bolt.
Hannah: Stand back from the door, Leo! I'm breaking the wood!
With a loud metallic ratcheting sound, the bolt groaned under the force. Hannah threw her weight against the wrench handle until the thin oak paneling cracked with a sharp snap.
Hannah: Come here, sweetheart! Give me your hands!
She pulled the trembling seven-year-old boy out from the narrow wall cavity. Wood splinters caught on his clothes, but Hannah wrapped her arms around him, pulling his crying face against her chest.
Boy: She said dad would never find me... She said I was going away forever...
Hannah: Shh, you're safe now. I've got you, Leo. I've got you.
Heels clicked sharply against the marble behind them. Isabella, wearing a champagne golden satin gown, stepped into the hallway, her golden eyes flashing with sudden fury as billionaire Ethan Vance walked in right behind her.
Isabella: Put him back, and I may let you keep your job!
Ethan froze in his tracks, his eyes darting from his terrified son to the open hole in the wall, and finally to his wife's cold face.
Ethan: What did you just say to her, Isabella?
Before she could answer, Ethan took three fast steps forward, raised his hand, and delivered a thunderous slap across her face. The impact cracked through the quiet hall, sending her golden gown swishing as her head snapped sideways in total shock.
