The Secret In The Safe

The Stepmother Pushed My Son Down The Grand Marble Stairs

Victoria: What wall safe?! You gave me the combination to the study safe weeks ago!

David: I gave you the code to the household budget safe, Victoria. Not my late wife's private lockbox.

Victoria: Sarah died two years ago! Why are you still holding onto that dead woman's papers?!

David: Do not speak Sarah's name with your filthy tongue.

David carefully handed Toby back to Clara, who held the boy securely on the lower landing.

David: Take him into the sitting room, Clara. Make sure he sips some warm water.

Clara: Right away, Mr. Whitman. Come on, little buddy, let's get you some blankets.

Toby: Don't let her hurt my dad, Clara.

Clara: Nobody is hurting your daddy today, Toby. Truth is on our side.

David walked slowly up the curved marble staircase, his tall frame casting a dark shadow over Victoria.

He reached into the breast pocket of his dark charcoal suit jacket, pulling out a thick manila folder.

David: Do you recognize this legal document, Victoria?

Victoria: That's just standard corporate filings! Why are you waving old paper in my face?!

David: This is the irrevocable testamentary trust established by Sarah before she passed.

Victoria: I know what that trust is! It names you as the sole executive trustee!

David: Keep reading section nine, Victoria. Read what happens if I ever remarry.

David opened the folder and held the cream parchment inches from her pale face.

Victoria: 'In the event of the surviving spouse's legal marriage, sixty percent of corporate voting stock transfers immediately to Toby Whitman'...

David: Which means the moment I married you, I lost all voting power over the company.

Victoria's eyes darted across the text, her breath coming in shallow, uneven gasps.

Victoria: The boy... The boy owns sixty percent of Sterling Logistics?!

David: Toby owns the entire company, Victoria. He owns this mansion, and he owns the bank accounts.

Officer Davis: And that is why you wanted that little boy off the stairs, isn't it, ma'am?

Victoria snapped her head toward the officer, her cheeks flushing bright crimson with defensive fury.

Victoria: I didn't push him! I would never harm a child over a legal contract!

David: Read clause ten, Victoria. Read the survivorship clause out loud so Officer Davis can hear it.

Victoria backed up until her shoulders hit the white wainscoting beneath the high gallery portraits.

David: If Toby suffered a fatal accident, full control of that sixty percent transferred to my surviving spouse.

Victoria: That is standard estate language! Every probate attorney in Texas includes survivorship clauses!

David: But not every probate attorney receives an offshore wire payment of two hundred thousand dollars.

Victoria froze against the wall, her hands trembling violently at her sides.

Victoria: What offshore wire payment?!

David: The wire payment sent from your personal account in Nassau to my family's notary last Thursday.

Victoria: That was an advance for legal consulting on our prenuptial agreement!

David: The notary confessed to federal investigators three hours ago, Victoria.

Victoria: Confessed?! What could he possibly confess to?!

David: He confessed that you paid him to alter the medical guardianship terms in Toby's trust.

Victoria swallowed hard, her manicured nails digging into the silk fabric of her light blue gown.

Victoria: He has no proof of that! It's his word against mine!

David: He handed over the text messages, the bank wire routing numbers, and your audio recordings.

The sound of heavy tactical boots echoed from the front driveway outside the arched double doors.

A second police cruiser pulled up behind David's car, its red and blue lights flashing across the marble foyer.
