The grand sunlit mansion in Dallas stood like a fortress, but inside its walls, little ten-year-old Lily felt trapped. Ever since her mother passed away three years ago, the house had changed completely. Her father, Richard Vance, was a powerful man who built an oil fortune from scratch. He used to be full of life, running around the estate, laughing, and teaching Lily how to ride horses on weekends.
Then Victoria arrived. Victoria was young, glamorous, and always dressed in rich dark velvet dresses. Within six months of meeting Richard, she had convinced him to sign a prenup, marry her, and step back from his boardroom responsibilities. Shortly after the wedding, Richard’s health took a sharp downward turn. He lost his strength, suffered from severe dizziness, and ended up bound to a wheelchair. Victoria hired private nurses and slowly cut off all outside family members, keeping Richard isolated inside the mansion.
Lily hated the way Victoria spoke to her father. She acted like a loving, devoted wife whenever guests were around, but behind closed doors, her tone was cold and sharp. Lily tried telling her grandmother that something was wrong, but Victoria convinced everyone that the young girl was just grieving her biological mother and making up wild stories to get attention.
Every afternoon, Victoria would prepare a special liquid medicine in a small glass room off the main hallway. She never let the staff touch the vials. She insisted on personally administering the daily shots into Richard’s neck, claiming it was an advanced imported nerve therapy that kept his muscle spasms under control. But Lily noticed that every time her father got the shot, he became glassy-eyed, confused, and weak for hours afterward.
One afternoon, while playing hide-and-seek by herself in the grand foyer, Lily hid behind a thick curtain near the study. Through a crack in the door, she saw something that made her heart stop. Her father was not slumped in his chair. He was standing near his desk, looking at official paperwork. But before she could speak, Victoria entered the room, and Richard quickly sat back down, closing his eyes as if exhausted.
Lily knew right then that something strange was happening. She began watching Victoria’s every move, waiting for the right moment to save her dad.
