Clara immediately dropped to her knees and scooped up young Lily into her protective arms.
She wiped a small spot of stray white frosting from the toddler's soft cheek with a tissue.
Lily clung tightly to Clara's green dress while sobbing softly against her shoulder.
Clara stood up tall and faced her mother-in-law with anger burning in her eyes.
Clara: You have no right to treat a innocent toddler like this in my home!
Evelyn: This is my son's house, and you are merely a guest who overstayed.
Clara: I am his legal wife, and Lily is his real daughter!
Evelyn: You really believe that foolish story, do you not, Clara?
Before Clara could reply, the heavy white double doors of the grand foyer burst wide open.
Mark stepped into the room wearing his dark business suit with a heavy, furious look.
He looked at the smashed cake on the floor and then glared directly at Clara.
Mark: What on earth is going on in this house right now?
Evelyn: Your wife just threw a massive tantrum and ruined the birthday cake, Mark!
Clara stared at her mother-in-law in total disbelief at the blatant, terrible lie.
Clara: That is a complete lie and you know it, Evelyn!
Mark: Shut your mouth right now, Clara!
Mark took three quick steps forward and pointed an angry finger directly in Clara's face.
Mark: Touch my mother again or disrespect her, and you are completely finished here!
Clara felt her heart drop into her stomach as her husband took his mother's side again.
This was not the first time Mark had blindly believed his mother over his own wife.
For two long years, Clara had endured the subtle isolation and quiet cruelties in silence.
However, seeing her daughter frightened on her own birthday broke the last thread of patience.
Clara: You did not even ask me what actually happened here today, Mark.
Mark: I know my mother, and I know how unstable you have been lately.
Clara: I am not unstable, but I am finally seeing the real truth about you.
