The bell above the diner door jingled softly as Clara pushed through the damp midnight air. The neon lights reflected across puddles in the cracked parking lot outside.
Clara: Is anyone sitting here?
A woman wearing an oversized wool coat and dark sunglasses pushed a booth seat outward with her boot.
Elena: Sit down, Clara. Keep your voice down and slide that folder under the table.
Clara: How do you know my name? Who sent you that text from my fiancé's private office records?
Elena: I know your name because three years ago, I wore the exact same white silk gown you're supposed to put on tomorrow morning.
Clara's breath caught in her throat as she sat on the cracked vinyl booth.
Clara: You... you were engaged to Julian?
Elena: Not engaged. Married. For fourteen months, until his family's trust fund lawyers squeezed me into silence with a non-disclosure agreement.
Clara: That's impossible. Julian showed me his single status certificate for the marriage license. He swore he'd never been married.
Elena: When your family owns half the commercial real estate downtown, city clerks tend to overlook filing dates. Take off your ring for a second and look at the inner band.
Clara pulled the platinum diamond ring off her trembling left finger and held it under the dim diner bulb.
Clara: It says 'Forever J.V.'... there's nothing else.
Elena: Scratch the inner edge with your thumbnail. Right beside the hallmark stamp.
Clara ran her nail along the groove, feeling a sharp microscopic edge give way to reveal two faded letters beneath the polish: E.M.
Clara: Elena... Elena Miller? This was your ring?
Elena: He recycles everything, Clara. The ring, the wedding vows, the exact same guest list, and the identical prenup contract.
Clara: Why? What does he gain from marrying women and hiding his wealth behind dummy corporation bakeries?
Elena: His grandfather's will contains an ironclad inheritance clause. Julian cannot access the eighty-million-dollar trust fund unless he remains married for five consecutive years with a legal heir.
Clara: And Leo? The little boy in the legal paperwork?
Elena: Leo is my son. And Julian took full legal custody of him using the very same clauses you're holding in that folder tonight.
Clara stared at the woman's hollow cheeks, realizing the cold reality closing in on her own life.
Clara: He told me Leo was a child from a charitable foundation his firm sponsored.
Elena: He lied. He keeps Leo hidden at a private boarding academy upstate so the trustees believe he's a devoted family man while keeping me completely shut out.
Clara: Why are you telling me this now? Aren't you terrified of his lawyers suing you into bankruptcy?
Elena: I have nothing left to lose. But you still have tomorrow morning. You can walk away, or you can help me break his estate wide open.
