The Hammer In Her Hand

The Secret Hidden Inside My Father's Wealthy Estate Box

The bright light flooded the massive hallway of the luxury estate.

White marble floors stretched out under the grand chandelier overhead.

A giant American flag hung quietly on the main wall of the foyer.

Twelve-year-old Clara ran across the shiny floor as fast as she could.

Her dark navy blue dress fluttered behind her as her heart pounded hard.

She held a small wooden hammer tightly in her right hand.

Her small shoes made rapid tapping sounds against the cold polished marble.

Dozens of relatives in black dresses and suits stood around the room.

They had all gathered to sign the final papers for the vast family trust fund.

Everyone turned their heads in confusion as the young girl dashed past them.

Her uncle Julian stepped out from the main library door into her path.

He wore a fine dark grey suit that matched his sharp eyes.

Julian: Where are you going with that tool, Clara?

Clara: Get out of my way right now, Uncle Julian!

Julian: You need to calm down and act polite today.

Clara did not stop running for even a single second.

She dodged around his tall arm and ran straight toward the front platform.

On top of the velvet table sat a sealed white wooden box structure.

It looked like a solid display box built for the upcoming legal ceremony.

Her grandmother Evelyn gasped as she watched Clara reach the table.

Evelyn: Somebody grab that child before she hurts herself!

Clara raised the small wooden hammer high above her head with both hands.

She did not hesitate for even a moment as she brought it down.

The heavy blow struck the top panel of the white wooden box.

A sharp cracking sound echoed through the high ceilings of the mansion hall.

A deep fracture split the smooth painted finish right across the top.

Julian: Stop right now!

Julian rushed forward with his arm reaching out to grab the young girl.

Clara froze in place while breathing heavily from her frantic sprint.

She kept her wide eyes fixed on the narrow gap she had created.

The crowd went completely silent as everybody waited to see what happened.

A quiet rustling sound came from inside the dark crevice of the wood.

Evelyn: Something moved inside there...

Julian stopped in his tracks with a look of pure terror on his face.

Clara leaned her face closer to the small dark gap in the panel.

A tearful blue eye stared back up at her through the narrow crack.

Clara: Mom?

The crowd let out a sudden wave of sharp collective gasps.
