Bright natural daylight poured into the immaculate white hall, illuminating the spotless tile floor where a small child played quietly. It was supposed to be a normal Tuesday morning in the suburban home, but an unsettling atmosphere hung heavily in the air, muffled only by the low ambient drone of the ventilation system. A fair-skinned girl in a bright yellow sweater and blue jeans crawled purposefully across the polished marble floor. She held a single slice of white bread in her small hands, her tiny fingers sliding the food directly into an air vent grate with practiced ease. A soft bread rustle echoed faintly against the pristine walls as the snack disappeared into the dark metal shaft.
Lily: There you go...
A detailed view of the child's small hand showed her pushing the bread slice completely through the white vent grate, followed by the faint sound of bread scraping inside the metal vent. Down the brightly lit hall, sudden, heavy running footsteps broke the silence.
Man: Lily!
A man in a crisp white T-shirt and black jeans rushed frantically out of a doorway, holding a heavy hammer tightly in his grip. He slid to a halt on the marble floor, his heart pounding against his ribs as he stared down at his young daughter with wide eyes.
Man: Who are you feeding in there?
The father knelt quickly beside his daughter on the marble floor, the cold metal of the hammer resting against his knee while his gaze darted from her face to the narrow vent grate.
Lily: He gets hungry at night...
The young girl in the yellow sweater looked up at her father with completely innocent eyes, her small voice carrying a chill straight to his core. Without another word, the father gripped the handle of his hammer tighter, his knuckles turning white under the bright light.
Man: Step back right now, Lily.
He swung the tool forward with sudden, raw fury, smashing the white wall with his hammer and shattering drywall into jagged pieces under the bright light with a loud metallic crash. Dust filled the air as chunks of plaster rained down onto the tile floor. Inside the newly formed hole in the wall, a dirty, tearful boy in a beige T-shirt shrank away from the sudden glare, clinging tightly to a worn teddy bear while whimpering and gasping for air. The father dropped his hammer to the floor, his hands trembling as he reached into his pocket and pulled out an old black-and-white photograph of two twin children holding teddy bears in front of an American flag.
Man: You hid my son right here in this house?!
