The heavy doors rattled as heavy footsteps paused directly outside the dining room threshold.
Two men wearing tailored suits and security earpieces stepped inside, their postures stiff and combative.
Suit One: Mr. Vance, we are here on behalf of Ross Capital to escort Mrs. Ross off the premises.
Ethan: Mrs. Ross? So she admits to the name now.
Suit Two: We have private instructions to retrieve the electronic files currently stored on that tablet device.
Mark: Step back! Those files are personal evidence of corporate conspiracy!
Suit One: Hand over the device, kid, before this becomes an unpleasant physical altercation.
Ethan stepped between the two men and Mark, his six-foot-two frame towering over the first security guard.
Ethan: You are standing inside the private property of Vance Tower. You have exactly thirty seconds to vacate this floor.
Suit Two: With all due respect, Mr. Vance, your stepbrother Richard authorized our security pass twenty minutes ago.
Ethan: Richard does not own this building. He is a minority shareholder with zero executive authority over commercial leases.
Chloe stood up from her chair, looking at the two men with wide, terrified eyes.
Chloe: Did Julian send you? Did he tell you to bring me to his penthouse?
Suit One: Mr. Ross expects you at the private hangar in twenty minutes, Chloe. Grab your things.
Ethan: She is not going anywhere. She is a prime suspect in an ongoing criminal fraud investigation.
Suit Two: You do not have the power to detain a free citizen, Mr. Vance.
Ethan: I do when the city district attorney has already signed an emergency material witness hold.
The first guard reached toward the inside pocket of his jacket, but Ethan did not flinch.
Ethan: Pull that firearm, and my building security snipers on the opposite rooftop will have you neutral in four seconds.
The guard froze, his hand remaining motionless beneath his lapel.
Mark: Look at the laser dot on his chest, Mr. Vance. Your rooftop security is already locked on.
A small crimson dot danced across the guard's silk necktie, steady and unmistakable.
Suit One: This is ridiculous. We were just hired to provide standard private transportation.
Ethan: Then turn around, get back in the service elevator, and tell Julian Ross that his dinner trick failed completely.
Suit Two: Julian won't take this lightly, Vance. The board meeting is tomorrow morning at eight.
Ethan: Tell Julian I look forward to seeing him in the boardroom. We have a great deal of business to settle.
The two guards exchanged nervous glances, took two steps back, and vanished down the carpeted corridor.
The heavy double doors swung shut once again, leaving the dining room in cold stillness.
Chloe dropped to her knees on the Persian rug, clutching the edge of Ethan's tailored trousers.
Chloe: Ethan, please listen to me! Julian is going to flee the country! He has a chartered jet waiting at the regional airport!
Ethan: Why should I care where your husband flies?
Chloe: Because he has all the original trust fund documents! He stole your father's private diaries from the family safe three weeks ago!
Ethan looked down at her, his eyes hardening into solid slate.
Ethan: You gave him the security codes to my family home.
Chloe: He forced me, Ethan! He said he would hurt my mother!
Ethan: You gave a common thief the combination to my father’s private study safe.
Mark: She didn't just give him the combination, Mr. Vance. Look at the timestamp on the home security logs on page nine.
Ethan snatched the tablet back, his thumb rapidly flicking across the security audit history.
Ethan: Twelve-fifteen in the morning, two weeks ago. While I was in New York negotiating the hospital bond issue.
Mark: She let Julian in through the side garden door herself.
Ethan closed his eyes for a brief moment, the sheer scale of the betrayal cutting deeper than any corporate loss he had ever endured.
Ethan: Get up off the floor, Chloe. Stop playing the victim on my carpet.
Chloe rose slowly, her mascara smudged across her pale cheeks, her hands trembling violently.
Chloe: What are you going to do to me?
Ethan: You are going to make a phone call to your husband right now. And you are going to tell him the plan succeeded.
Chloe: And if I refuse?
Ethan: Then you walk out of here in police custody in front of every television camera in the lobby.
