Two state troopers entered the master suite, their boots thudding heavily against the floorboards as they flanked Deputy Lawson.
Deputy Lawson: Victoria Davis, turn around and place your hands behind your back.
Victoria: Get your hands off me! Arthur, tell them to stop! We can negotiate a private settlement!
Arthur: The time for negotiation ended when you forged Harold's medical power of attorney, Victoria.
Victoria: Sarah, please! We were raised in the same world! You can't let them put me in handcuffs!
Sarah: We were not raised in the same world, Victoria. My mother cleaned hospital floors to pay for my nursing school.
Sarah: You lived in luxury while starving my father of his medicine so you could buy another penthouse in Manhattan.
The metal cuffs clicked shut around Victoria's wrists, the sharp sound cutting through the tense atmosphere of the room.
Deputy Lawson: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
Victoria: You won't get away with this, Sarah! The board of directors will never accept a nurse as CEO!
Arthur: The board of directors reports directly to the voting majority of the family trust, Victoria.
Arthur: And Sarah holds eighty-five percent of those voting shares as of midnight tonight.
Victoria was escorted out of the suite, her frantic protests fading down the long hallway until the front doors slammed shut below.
A soft, rhythmic beep echoed from the medical monitor beside the bed, shifting in pitch as the room quieted.
Sarah rushed to Harold's side, placing her fingers against the pulse point on his warm wrist.
Sarah: Arthur, look at the vitals. His heart rate is stabilizing. The sedative is wearing off.
Benson brought a basin of warm water and a clean cotton cloth, offering them to Sarah with hands that shook with relief.
Benson: Miss Sarah... may I call you Miss Sarah?
Sarah: Just Sarah, Benson. Please, you are family in this house.
Benson: Your father spoke of your mother every single Christmas. He never took down her portrait in the private study.
Benson pointed toward the small locked room behind the bedroom bookshelves, where a soft light glowed from within.
Sarah gently wiped Harold's brow with the damp cloth, her heart swelling with an emotion she had buried for years.
Harold's eyelids fluttered, his cracked lips parting slightly as a faint, ragged breath escaped his throat.
Harold: Sa... Sarah?
Sarah: I'm here, Dad. I'm right here beside you. You don't have to fight alone anymore.
A single tear tracked down the old man's weathered cheek as his weak fingers curled around Sarah's hand.
Harold: The... the seam... did you find...?
Arthur: Everything is secure, Harold. Arthur Vance is here, and your real will is safely in my hands.
Harold: Victoria... where is she?
Arthur: She is in police custody, my friend. She will never enter this house again.
Harold closed his eyes, a deep, shuddering sigh of profound relief lifting his chest beneath the sheets.
Harold: Thank you, Arthur. Thank you for bringing my little girl home.
