Handcuffs On White Lace

Detective Vance marched up the center aisle of the ballroom, his polished boots stepping over the white carpet. Behind him, two officers carried heavy steel handcuffs.

Detective Vance: Julian Sterling? We received the federal warrant dispatch regarding Victoria Vance.

Julian: She’s standing right there on the stage, Detective. The forged death certificate and the recorded audio confession are on the table.

Detective Vance: We also have the forensic report from the clinic, Mr. Sterling. The maintenance worker confessed ten minutes ago to locking Clara Sterling’s room before the fire.

Victoria thrashed against the floral arch, her lace dress tearing along the seam as she backed away toward the curtain.

Victoria: Get away from me! Do you know who my father is?!

Detective Vance: Your father was arrested at the airport twenty minutes ago for corporate conspiracy and tax evasion, Miss Vance.

Victoria: No! No! This is a nightmare!

Detective Vance: Officers, take her into custody.

The two uniformed officers stepped onto the stage, grabbing Victoria’s arms and pinning them behind her back. The cold, sharp click of the handcuffs echoed clearly through the silent ballroom.

Victoria let out a shrill, hysterical scream as the officers forced her down onto her knees on the white carpet.

Victoria: Julian! Tell them to stop! Tell them we can make a deal! I’ll surrender all claims to the trust fund!

Julian: You don't have any claims left to surrender, Victoria. You’re going to prison.

Victoria: Clara! You monster! You ruined my life!

Clara: You ruined your own life three years ago when you chose greed over human life, Victoria. Enjoy your cell.

The officers pulled Victoria to her feet, escorting her down the center aisle past two hundred guests who held up their smartphones, capturing every second of her downfall on video.

Guest A: Look at her! The bride in handcuffs!

Guest B: She’ll be spending the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary!

Victoria thrashed against the officers' grip, her lace veil falling off her head and trampling under their boots as she was dragged out through the double doors into the night air.

Outside, red and blue police lights illuminated the marble driveway, where news reporters swarmed the squad cars, flashbulbs exploding continuously.

Reporter A: Miss Vance! Did you forge Clara Sterling’s death certificate?

Reporter B: Is it true you set the East Wing fire for a forty-million-dollar inheritance?

The heavy car door slammed shut, cutting off Victoria’s shrill shouting instantly.

Inside the ballroom, Julian turned to Clara, his eyes filled with tears as he stepped forward and gently wrapped his arms around her trembling shoulders.

Julian: Clara... I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry I didn't search for you harder.

Clara: You didn't know, Julian. She fooled everyone.

Julian: Starting tonight, the best reconstructive surgeons in the country will be working on your face and your feet. I will make sure you have everything you need.

Clara: I don't care about the scars, Julian. I just wanted my family back.

Julian kissed her forehead, holding her close as the guests broke into a warm, respectful round of applause.
