The Royal Windsor Ballroom sparkled beneath towering crystal chandeliers as diplomats, business leaders, and members of old aristocratic families gathered for the annual Royal Heritage Gala. Classical musicians played softly while servers moved gracefully between tables carrying silver trays filled with champagne.
Among them was twenty-four-year-old Emma Brooks.
Unlike the glamorous guests surrounding her, Emma wore a simple waitress uniform and comfortable black shoes. She had taken every extra shift she could find to help pay for her mother's medical treatments before she passed away the previous winter.
The only thing Emma had left of her mother was an old green jade pendant hanging from a worn silver chain.
Her mother had always repeated the same words.
"Never take this off."
Emma never questioned why.
As she carefully offered champagne to a table of distinguished guests, one woman suddenly stood from her chair.
She wore an elegant ivory gown, a diamond tiara, and white satin gloves.
Everyone respectfully stepped aside.
Lady Eleanor Calder rarely attended public events anymore.
But today...
Her attention wasn't on the guests.
It was fixed entirely on the necklace around Emma's neck.
With trembling hands, she stopped the young waitress.
Her voice remained calm but filled with authority.
"That pendant..."
"Where did you get it?"
The ballroom grew strangely quiet.
Emma instinctively touched the jade resting against her chest.
"It's my mother's."
Lady Eleanor slowly reached forward.
Her gloved fingers gently brushed the smooth green stone.
Her breathing became uneven.
She recognized every detail.
The tiny gold clasp.
The delicate carved pattern.
Even the faint scratch near the edge.
It couldn't be a coincidence.
Then she asked the question that changed everything.
"What is your mother's name?"
Emma hesitated for only a second.
Then answered softly.
"Marian Calder."
