The Royal Palace of Valoria had never looked more magnificent. Crystal chandeliers sparkled above rows of noble families dressed in embroidered gowns and military uniforms. Golden banners hung from towering marble columns while musicians filled the grand hall with elegant orchestral music. The annual Festival of the Crown was meant to celebrate the kingdom's prosperity, and every influential family had gathered to witness the queen's ceremonial address.
Outside the palace gates, however, life looked very different.
Among the crowd stood fourteen-year-old Elara, a quiet orphan dressed in patched clothing that had seen countless winters. She survived by cleaning market stalls and sleeping in abandoned buildings. The only possession she treasured was an old silver ribbon her adoptive grandmother had tied around her wrist before passing away. The elderly woman had always told her, "No matter how the world treats you, remember—you were born for something greater."
Elara never understood those words.
As servants distributed bread to the poor gathered outside the palace, Elara stepped forward with the others. Her presence immediately caught Queen Celeste's attention.
The queen disliked seeing beggars near royal ceremonies.
She ordered the guards to bring the girl inside the great hall.
The nobles whispered as Elara stood barefoot on the polished marble floor beneath the enormous throne.
Queen Celeste smiled coldly.
"If you wish to stand before royalty," she said, "you should at least look clean."
She lifted a silver pitcher filled with water.
Without warning, she poured it over Elara's head.
Water soaked the girl's torn dress and dripped onto the marble floor.
Laughter echoed through the hall.
Many nobles looked away in embarrassment, but none dared challenge the queen.
Only one person remained completely silent.
King Aldric.
The aging ruler watched the water run across the girl's chest with growing confusion.
Something beneath her skin began to shimmer.
