The Royal Crescent Ballroom glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers as the city's wealthiest families gathered for the annual charity gala.
Children in elegant white dresses laughed beside their parents while musicians played soft classical music.
Near the entrance stood seven-year-old Lily.
She wore a simple white dress that had clearly been altered several times to fit her growing frame.
She wasn't rich.
She had only been invited by the orphanage that benefited from the evening's fundraiser.
Around her neck hung a single large white pearl tied to a thin ribbon.
It was the only gift her late mother had ever given her.
As Lily admired the beautiful decorations, she accidentally bumped into Victoria Ashcroft, one of the city's most influential socialites.
Victoria looked down with disgust.
"Get this trash out of here!"
The frightened child stepped backwards.
"I'm sorry..."
As Lily stumbled, the pearl necklace snapped.
The pearl rolled across the polished marble floor.
Victoria deliberately stepped forward.
With one sharp movement, her glittering stiletto crushed the pearl beneath her heel.
A loud crack echoed across the ballroom.
Guests froze.
Victoria laughed coldly.
"Only gold shines here."
Lily dropped to her knees, crying as she searched the floor.
"My mommy gave it before heaven..."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Most guests simply watched.
No one moved.
Until a man in a black tuxedo rushed across the ballroom.
Alexander Reed knelt beside the little girl and gently wiped away her tears.
"It's alright," he whispered.
As he helped gather the broken pieces, something unexpected caught his eye.
Among the fragments lay another pearl.
This one was untouched.
Unlike the broken one, it carried a tiny royal crest engraved into its surface.
Alexander's expression changed instantly.
