The Shadow Over The Mansion

The Rich Stepmother Tried To Destroy My Daughter's Life

The grand estate stood high upon the sunlit hills of Westchester, New York.

Richard Sterling looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows of his bright study.

He was a successful businessman who owned several major commercial real estate properties.

His eight-year-old daughter Lily sat on the plush velvet sofa playing with her doll.

Richard: Are you ready for your music lesson today sweetie?

Lily: Yes Daddy, but Victoria said I cannot play piano anymore.

Richard paused and turned slowly toward his young daughter.

Richard: Why would she tell you something like that?

Lily: She said the piano noise hurts her head in the afternoon.

A quiet frustration began to build deep inside Richard's chest.

He had married Victoria six months after losing his first wife to illness.

He hoped Victoria would bring warm maternal energy back into the house.

Richard: This is your home Lily and you can play whenever you wish.

Lily: She gets very angry when you leave for the office.

Richard walked over and knelt beside his quiet daughter on the rug.

Richard: Does she say unkind things to you when I am gone?

Lily: She told me I am not part of the family trust fund.

Richard felt his heart tighten with sudden worry and confusion.

He had never discussed financial matters or inheritance in front of his child.

Richard: Nobody is taking anything away from you sweetheart.

Lily: She said her mother is moving into my bedroom next week.

Richard stood up immediately and pulled his tailored gray jacket straight.

Richard: Stay right here while I go speak with Victoria.

He walked down the long corridor toward the main living room.

The sunlight poured through the high stained-glass windows above the marble staircase.

Victoria was sitting at the glass table looking at legal documents.

Richard: Victoria, we need to have a serious conversation right now.

Victoria: What is it darling, you look so stressed today.

Richard: Why are you telling Lily strange things about her future here?

Victoria adjusted her diamond necklace and set down her silver pen.

Victoria: I am simply preparing her for real life as she grows older.

Richard: She is eight years old and deserves love, not financial talk.

Victoria: A child needs to understand boundaries in a grand estate like this.

Richard: Do not ever speak to my daughter like that again.

Victoria smiled coldly and slowly folded the paper on the table.

Victoria: You worry far too much about that little girl Richard.

Richard knew at that moment that something had changed in his home.
