A Child Speaks The Truth

The Quiet Maid Framed For The Missing Diamond Jewelry Spoke Up

Julian: What are you talking about, Chloe? What is this paper?

Chloe: Look at it, Daddy! I found it hidden inside Mom's designer shoebox under the dressing room floorboard!

Evelyn lunged down the final three steps, her manicured fingers clawing through the air to snatch the receipt.

Evelyn: Chloe! Give that to me right this second! You have no right digging through my private closet!

Julian caught Evelyn's wrist firmly in mid-air, his grip tightening like a vise as he unfolded the heavy paper with his free hand.

Julian: Don't touch the child, Evelyn. Let me see what she found.

Evelyn: It’s just an old boutique receipt, Julian! Chloe is confused because she's terrified of loud noises!

Julian smoothed out the wrinkled parchment, his eyes scanning the embossed golden seal at the top of the header.

Julian: This isn't a boutique receipt, Evelyn. This is a consignment intake slip from Manhattan Premier Jewelers.

Maya lifted her head from the floor, gasping for breath as the security guard loosened his grip on her shoulders.

Maya: Manhattan Premier? That’s where Mrs. Hall sent me to pick up her watch repair last winter.

Julian: Dated yesterday afternoon at three-thirty. For an antique four-strand Cartier diamond necklace.

Julian stared at the bold numbers printed across the total line, his breath catching in his throat.

Julian: Sold on consignment for four hundred and twenty thousand dollars in cash wire transfer.

The two security officers looked at each other awkwardly, slowly releasing their hold on Maya's arms.

Officer Miller: Mr. Hall, do you still require us to detain the domestic employee?

Julian: Step back against the front doors, Miller. Both of you. Do not let anyone exit this foyer.

Evelyn: Julian, you cannot honestly believe a child over your own wife! Chloe doesn't understand banking!

Chloe: I heard you on the phone, Mom! You told the man in New York that the money had to go to the offshore account before Friday!

Evelyn: Shut your mouth, you little brat! I am your mother!

Julian: You are her stepmother, Evelyn. And you will not scream at my daughter in this house.

Evelyn smoothed down the fabric of her crimson dress, trying desperately to regain her polished composure.

Evelyn: Fine! I sold an old piece of jewelry from the safe! Is that a crime? As your wife, I am entitled to family assets!

Julian: That necklace belonged to my mother, Evelyn. It was explicitly excluded from our prenuptial agreement.

Evelyn: It was sitting in a dark vault gathering dust while I needed liquid capital for my art foundation!

Maya: But Mrs. Hall, why did you tell Mr. Hall that you saw me putting velvet jewelry boxes into my backpack?

Julian's eyes darkened, turning from confusion into pure, icy rage.

Julian: Yes, Evelyn. Explain that part to me. Why did you stand here ten minutes ago and swear on your life that you caught Maya red-handed?

Evelyn opened her mouth, but only a dry, stammering whisper came out.

Evelyn: I... I saw someone in the dressing room. In the dim hallway light, I assumed it was Maya.

Julian: You didn't assume anything, Evelyn. You deliberately placed my mother's velvet box inside Maya's staff locker.

Maya covered her mouth with both hands, tears flowing freely down her cheeks once again.

Maya: You put the box in my locker? You tried to send me to a state penitentiary for twenty years?

Julian: How could you frame an innocent girl, Evelyn? How could you be so soulless?

Evelyn: Soulless? You give this maid ten thousand dollars for her sick mother, but you question my spending on Rodeo Drive!

Julian: Maya worked sixty hours a week caring for Chloe after my first wife died! She earned every single cent she ever received!

Evelyn: And what about me, Julian? What do I get for playing the smiling hostess to your boring business partners?

Julian walked over to Maya, extending his hand and gently pulling the weeping young woman up from the marble floor.

Julian: Let Maya go right now. Both of you guards, unclip those handcuffs and step outside.

The metal handcuffs clattered against the side table as the officers backed out through the heavy double doors into the courtyard.

Julian turned slowly, his gaze pinning his trembling wife against the polished mahogany banister.

Julian: Now, Evelyn, let's talk about where that four hundred and twenty thousand dollars actually went.
